Itarsi Junction — station code ET — is one of those stations that most train travelers in India have passed through without really thinking about. It's a small town in Madhya Pradesh's Narmadapuram district, but its junction handles an enormous volume of train traffic. The Delhi-Chennai and Mumbai-Howrah routes intersect here, making Itarsi one of the most critical rail junctions in central India.

If you've taken a long-distance train from North India to South India or vice versa, you've almost certainly stopped at Itarsi, even if just for a few minutes.

Why Itarsi Matters

Itarsi sits at the intersection of four major rail routes:

  • North-South: Delhi to Chennai/Hyderabad via Bhopal

  • East-West: Mumbai to Howrah/Kolkata via Jabalpur and Allahabad

  • To Khandwa: Connecting to the Mumbai-Nagpur route

  • To Bhopal: The state capital is 90 km north

This makes it a natural stopping point for crew changes, loco changes, and passenger connections.

Station Layout

Itarsi has 7 platforms.

PlatformsTypical Traffic
1–2North-south mainline (Bhopal-Nagpur/Hyderabad route)
3–5East-west traffic (Mumbai-Allahabad route)
6–7Branch lines and passenger trains
The main entrance faces the town's main road. The station is compact and walkable.

Getting To and From Itarsi

Itarsi is a small town. Transport options are limited:

  • Auto-rickshaws: Available outside the station. Most destinations in town are ₹20–40.

  • To Bhopal: Trains to Bhopal run frequently (90 km, 1.5 hours). Or by road, about 2 hours.

  • To Pachmarhi: Itarsi is the nearest major station to Pachmarhi hill station (120 km). Taxis cost ₹1500–2000. MPSRTC buses also run.

Facilities

Waiting Rooms

AC waiting room available on the first floor. Small but clean. Confirmed ticket required. General waiting area on the ground floor.

Food

  • Platform stalls: The poha and samosa stalls at Itarsi are surprisingly good — this is Madhya Pradesh, and the poha-jalebi combo is taken seriously even at small junctions
  • Chai: Strong, milky chai from the platform vendors ₹10
  • Food court: Basic thali ₹60–80
The town outside has small restaurants and dhabas. Nothing notable, but adequate.

WiFi

RailWire WiFi available. OTP-based.

ATMs

SBI ATM inside the station.

Medical

First aid center on platform 1. Tip 1: Itarsi is a passing-through junction. Most trains stop for 5–15 minutes. If you want platform food, be quick — have your money ready and know what you want before the train stops. Tip 2: If you're connecting trains at Itarsi, check both your trains' platform assignments carefully. The junction sees trains from four directions, and platform assignments can change. Tip 3: Itarsi is the gateway to Pachmarhi — Madhya Pradesh's only hill station. If you're planning a Pachmarhi trip, break your journey at Itarsi and take the morning bus or a taxi. Tip 4: Winter fog (December-January) affects trains running through Itarsi, especially those coming from North India. Delays of 2–4 hours are common on Delhi-originating trains.

Use IndianRail.app to check real-time status — essential when connecting trains at a busy junction.

Itarsi Junction is the definition of a "railway town" — it exists primarily because of the railways. But if you're passing through or connecting here, the platform poha is good, the chai is hot, and the trains will get you where you need to go.
