Madgaon Junction — station code MAO — is Goa's primary long-distance railway station. Located in Margao (Madgaon), the commercial capital of South Goa, this station is where the majority of trains from Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and other cities arrive. The beautiful Konkan Railway route brings you through tunnels and over bridges with stunning views of the Western Ghats before depositing you in the heart of Goa.

MAO is a compact station — just 3 platforms — but it handles a surprising volume of traffic, especially during the October-March tourist season.

The station is small enough that you can't really get lost. Main entrance faces Margao city center.

Getting To and From MAO

By Taxi/Auto

Prepaid taxi stand outside the main entrance. Goa doesn't have auto-rickshaws in the traditional sense — you'll find motorcycle taxis (pilots), regular taxis, and app cabs.

Prepaid taxi rates:

  • MAO to Colva Beach: ₹200–250 (6 km)

  • MAO to Benaulim Beach: ₹250–300 (7 km)

  • MAO to Palolem Beach: ₹600–800 (35 km)

  • MAO to Panaji (Panjim): ₹600–800 (33 km)

  • MAO to Calangute/Baga (North Goa): ₹1000–1300 (40 km)

  • MAO to Dabolim/Goa Airport: ₹500–600 (23 km)

Goa taxis are expensive compared to other Indian states. There's no meter system — rates are fixed by the taxi union. App cabs (Goa Miles app, Ola) offer slightly cheaper rates.

By Bus

Kadamba Transport (KTCL) buses from the Margao bus stand (KTC bus stand, 1 km) connect to Panaji, Mapusa, and all Goan villages. Buses are cheap (₹15–40) and run frequently.

Rental Scooters/Bikes

Many visitors rent scooters or bikes in Goa. You can't rent from the station itself, but shops in Margao town (1 km walk) rent Honda Activas for ₹300–400/day. This is the best way to get around Goa.

Madgaon vs Thivim vs Vasco

Goa has three stations that matter:

  • Madgaon (MAO): Main station. South Goa. Most long-distance trains terminate here.
  • Thivim (THVM): North Goa station. Some Konkan Railway trains stop here. Closer to Calangute, Baga, Anjuna beaches.
  • Vasco da Gama (VSG): Near Dabolim Airport. A few trains use this station.
If you're heading to North Goa beaches, Thivim is actually more convenient. But most major trains go to MAO, so you'll likely end up here regardless and take a taxi north.

Facilities

Waiting Rooms

AC waiting room on the first floor. Small but clean. Valid ticket required. General waiting area on the ground floor.

Food

  • Platform stalls: Samosa, vada pav, chai, cold drinks
  • Food court: Small but functional. Veg and non-veg options.
  • Outside — this is Goa: Margao has excellent restaurants. Longuinho's (500 meters from station) is a Goan institution — pork vindaloo, fish curry rice, prawn balchão. Café Tato nearby for fish thali.
  • Goan fish curry rice: This is THE Goan dish. Available at any restaurant in Margao for ₹100–150.

WiFi

RailWire WiFi available.

ATMs

SBI, Bank of India ATMs inside the station. Margao city has plenty. Tip 1: Book onward transport before arriving if you're heading to South Goa beaches during peak season (December-January). Taxis queue up at the station, but during Christmas-New Year week, demand exceeds supply. Tip 2: The Konkan Railway route from Mumbai is one of India's most scenic train journeys. Sit on the right side (sea-facing) when coming from Mumbai. The bridges over river valleys and the tunnel sections are spectacular. Tip 3: Goa is small. Even Palolem Beach (South Goa's southernmost popular beach) is only 35 km from MAO. You can reach any point in Goa within 1.5 hours by road from the station. Tip 4: Tourist season is October–March. Monsoon (June–September) means many beach shacks are closed, but Goa is lush, green, and much cheaper. Trains are also easier to book during monsoon. Tip 5: Rent a scooter. Goa taxis are expensive. A rented Activa (₹300–400/day) gives you freedom to explore beaches, spice plantations, old churches, and the Goan countryside at your own pace.

Check train status on IndianRail.app — Konkan Railway trains can face delays during monsoon due to landslide-prone sections.

Cloak Room

Available at the station. Small but functional. ₹30 per bag.

Nearby Landmarks (from Margao/MAO)

Madgaon Junction is the beginning of your Goa experience. The station is small and functional — it won't win any design awards. But step outside, grab a fish curry rice at Longuinho's, and then head for the beach. That's what Goa is about.
