Gandhinagar Capital — station code GNCD — holds a unique distinction: it's India's first railway station with a five-star hotel built directly above the tracks. The station was redeveloped as part of Indian Railways' station modernization initiative, and the result is a facility that feels more like a conference center than a railway station.

Located in Gujarat's capital city Gandhinagar, about 25 km north of Ahmedabad, this station serves the state's administrative center and the growing commercial area around it. The Vande Bharat Express from Mumbai uses this station, making it increasingly important on the Gujarat rail map.

What Makes It Special

The standout feature is the 318-room hotel built on the air rights above the railway tracks. This was a first for Indian Railways — monetizing the space above a station without affecting rail operations. The station itself features:

  • Elevated hotel complex above the platforms
  • Modern, air-conditioned concourse
  • Convention center and conference facilities
  • Retail and food zones
  • Green building design with solar panels
  • Covered platforms with improved ventilation

Station Layout

GNCD has 4 platforms.

Gandhinagar Capital vs Ahmedabad Junction

  • Gandhinagar Capital (GNCD): Gandhinagar city. Modern station. Fewer trains.
  • Ahmedabad Junction (ADI): 25 km south. Old city (Kalupur). Most trains.
GNCD is convenient if you're visiting Gandhinagar specifically (government offices, GIFT City, Akshardham). For general Gujarat travel, ADI has far more train options.

Facilities

Waiting Areas

Air-conditioned waiting areas in the modern concourse. Comfortable seating, digital displays, and charging points. The hotel lobby above also functions as a premium waiting space for hotel guests.

Food

  • Station food court: Multiple branded and local food outlets
  • Hotel restaurants: The 5-star property above has restaurants — not cheap, but excellent if you want a proper meal before a long train journey
  • Gujarati food: Thepla, dhokla, fafda-jalebi — station stalls and nearby eateries

WiFi

Free WiFi throughout the station. Hotel WiFi for guests.

ATMs

Multiple bank ATMs in the concourse.

Accessibility

Modern station design with elevators, escalators, ramps, and accessible restrooms throughout. Significantly better than older stations. Tip 1: GNCD is still a relatively low-traffic station. Don't expect the crowds of Ahmedabad Junction. The modern facilities are a genuine pleasure to use. Tip 2: The Vande Bharat Express from Mumbai to GNCD has reduced travel time significantly. It's becoming the preferred way to reach Gandhinagar from Maharashtra. Tip 3: GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) is a 10-minute drive from the station. If you're visiting on business, GNCD is the closest station. Tip 4: Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar is one of the most impressive modern temples in India. 20 minutes from the station by auto.

Check IndianRail.app for train schedules — GNCD has limited services compared to ADI, so check availability carefully.

Gandhinagar Capital station represents a new model for Indian Railways — combining rail transport with commercial development and hospitality. The execution is impressive, and the station itself is a far cry from the typical Indian rail experience. If you're passing through Gujarat, it's worth seeing, even if just to imagine what India's stations could look like in the future.
