Ernakulam Junction — station code ERS — is the main railway station serving Kochi, Kerala's commercial capital. If you're arriving in Kochi by train, this is where you'll most likely end up. The station sits in the Ernakulam mainland area, across the backwaters from Fort Kochi and the harbor islands.

ERS is a well-maintained station on the Southern Railway network, handling trains from all major Indian cities. Kerala has among the highest per-capita rail usage in India, and it shows — the station is busy but organized.

Station Layout

Ernakulam Junction has 6 platforms.

PlatformsServices
1–2Rajdhani, Duronto, premium trains (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore routes)
3–4Long-distance express
5–6Regional and Kerala intercity trains
Main entrance faces the MG Road area of Ernakulam. The station is centrally located in the commercial district.

Getting To and From ERS

By Metro

Kochi Metro's Blue Line has a station at Town Hall, about 1 km from ERS. The metro connects to Aluva, Edapally, and other Ernakulam areas. A dedicated metro station closer to ERS is planned. Meanwhile, a short auto ride or 15-minute walk from Town Hall metro gets you to the station.

By Auto

Prepaid auto stand outside the main entrance. Kerala autos mostly use meters.
  • ERS to Fort Kochi: ₹150–200 (by road via bridges)
  • ERS to Ernakulam Town (ERN) station: ₹30–50
  • ERS to Kochi Airport (Nedumbassery): ₹600–800 (cab) or take the metro to Aluva + auto
  • ERS to Marine Drive: ₹30–40
  • ERS to Mattancherry/Jew Town: ₹100–150

By Ferry

The Ernakulam Boat Jetty is about 1.5 km from ERS. Ferries from here go to Fort Kochi (₹6), Mattancherry, and Vypeen Island. The ferry is the best way to reach Fort Kochi — scenic, cheap, and avoids traffic.

Ernakulam Junction vs Ernakulam Town

Kochi has two main stations very close to each other:

  • Ernakulam Junction (ERS): Southern station. Most trains originate/terminate here. Main station.
  • Ernakulam Town (ERN): Northern station, 3 km away. Some trains stop at both, some only at one.
If your ticket says ERS, come to Junction. If it says ERN, you need Town. They're close enough that an auto between them costs ₹30–50.

Facilities

Waiting Rooms

AC waiting room on the first floor. Confirmed ticket required. Good condition — Kerala stations are generally well-maintained. Upper-class lounge available.

Food

  • Platform stalls: Puttu-kadala (rice cake with chickpea curry), appam, dosa, Kerala parotta — ₹30–50
  • Meals: Kerala meals (rice with sambar, rasam, avial, thoran, papadum) — ₹60–80. Genuinely good.
  • Filter coffee and tea: Both excellent in Kerala stations.
  • Outside: Ernakulam's MG Road has excellent restaurants. Kayees Rahmathulla Hotel (near Boat Jetty) for Kochi biryani. Indian Coffee House for nostalgia and dosas.

WiFi

RailWire WiFi. OTP-based. Good coverage across all platforms.

Medical

First aid center on platform 1. Ernakulam General Hospital is 2 km away. Tip 1: Fort Kochi is across the water from Ernakulam. Take the ferry from the Boat Jetty (1.5 km from ERS) — it's ₹6 and takes 20 minutes. Fort Kochi has the Chinese fishing nets, St. Francis Church, and art galleries. Tip 2: Kochi Airport (Nedumbassery) is 30 km from ERS. The cheapest option is metro to Aluva (₹40, 45 minutes) and then auto/bus to the airport. Direct taxi costs ₹600–800. Tip 3: Kerala monsoon (June–August) is heavy. The station area can flood during intense rainfall. Train services on the Konkan Railway route (to Goa/Mumbai) face disruptions during monsoon. Check IndianRail.app for real-time updates. Tip 4: If you're visiting during Onam (August-September), expect festive crowds and decorated stations. Trains fill up fast during Onam week. Tip 5: Alleppey (Alappuzha) — famous for houseboats and backwaters — is just 1.5 hours by train from ERS. Trains are frequent and cheap. This is one of the best short train rides in India.

Cloak Room

Near platform 1. Open 6 AM–10 PM. ₹30 per bag. Valid ticket required.

Nearby Landmarks

Ernakulam Junction is a clean, well-run station that puts you at the doorstep of one of India's most beautiful cities. The ferry to Fort Kochi is worth it even if you have only a few hours. And the Kerala meals at the station restaurant are honestly better than what you'll find at most North Indian stations.
