Coimbatore Junction — station code CBE — serves Tamil Nadu's second-largest city, often called the "Manchester of South India" for its textile industry. The station is the main rail gateway to the Nilgiris (Ooty, Coonoor) and sits on important routes connecting Chennai, Kochi, Bangalore, and Palakkad.

With 6 platforms, CBE is a well-managed station that reflects the efficiency you expect from Tamil Nadu's railway infrastructure.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway Connection

One of the main reasons travelers come through CBE is to connect to the Nilgiri Mountain Railway — the UNESCO World Heritage toy train to Ooty via Coonoor. Here's how it works:

  1. Take a train from CBE to Mettupalayam (MTP): 40 km, about 1 hour. Multiple trains daily.
  2. At Mettupalayam, board the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR): The rack-and-pinion train climbs through tea plantations and forests to Coonoor and then Ooty. Journey time: about 5 hours.
  3. The NMR departs Mettupalayam early morning (around 7:10 AM). The recommended connection is the overnight Nilgiri Express from Chennai, which arrives at Mettupalayam just before the NMR departure.
Book NMR tickets well in advance — they sell out during tourist season (October-May).

Facilities

Waiting Rooms

AC waiting room on the first floor. Confirmed ticket required. Clean and well-maintained. Upper-class lounge available.

Food

  • Platform stalls: Idli, dosa, vada, filter coffee — South Indian standards done well, ₹20–40
  • Meals: Tamil meals (unlimited thali) ₹60–80 at the station restaurant
  • Coimbatore specialty: Coimbatore is known for its kari dosai (mutton dosa) at local restaurants, though the station stalls stick to vegetarian
  • Outside: Annapoorna (Sri Krishna Sweets) is a Coimbatore institution — multiple branches, nearest is 1 km from the station. Their filter coffee and sweets are excellent.

WiFi

RailWire WiFi. OTP-based. Good coverage.

ATMs

Indian Bank, SBI ATMs inside. More options on Cross Cut Road. Tip 1: If you're heading to Ooty, plan the Mettupalayam connection carefully. The NMR only runs once a day in each direction. Missing the 7:10 AM departure means you'll need to take a bus to Ooty instead (which is fine, but the train ride is the whole point). Tip 2: Coimbatore Airport is only 10 km from the station. If you're flying in and taking a train onward, the transfer is easy and cheap. Tip 3: CBE is an excellent base for exploring the Nilgiris, Palani Hills, and Anamalai (Top Slip) wildlife areas. All are within 100 km by road. Tip 4: Winter mornings (December-January) in Coimbatore can be surprisingly cool for a South Indian city. The platform at 5 AM can feel chilly if you're in half-sleeves.

Check IndianRail.app for live train status and NMR updates.

Coimbatore Junction is the starting point for one of India's most spectacular train rides — the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Even if you're not heading to Ooty, CBE is a pleasant station in a city that's underrated as a travel hub. The filter coffee alone is worth stepping off the train for.
