Bhopal Junction — station code BPL — is the main railway station for Madhya Pradesh's capital city. Sitting on the Delhi-Chennai trunk route, virtually every north-south train passes through Bhopal, making it one of central India's most important junctions.

The station is located in the old city area, close to the lakes that define Bhopal's character. It's a mid-sized station with 6 platforms that handles both long-distance and regional traffic efficiently.

Station Layout

PlatformsServices
1–2Rajdhani, Shatabdi, premium trains
3–4Long-distance mail/express
5–6Regional and passenger trains
The main entrance faces Hamidia Road, the old city's main commercial street. The station building is modest — don't expect architectural grandeur here. But the inside is well-organized.

Getting To and From BPL

  • BPL to Upper Lake: ₹50–80
  • BPL to New Market: ₹30–50
  • BPL to Rani Kamlapati (Habibganj) Station: ₹80–100
  • BPL to Raja Bhoj Airport: ₹200–300

Bhopal Junction vs Rani Kamlapati (Habibganj)

This is important: Bhopal has two major stations just 5 km apart.

  • Bhopal Junction (BPL): Old city, traditional station. Most trains stop here.
  • Rani Kamlapati (RKMP, formerly Habibganj): India's first fully redeveloped "world-class" station. Some premium trains now originate or stop here. New Market/MP Nagar side of the city.
They're close enough that an auto between them takes 15 minutes. But showing up at the wrong one is a hassle. Check your ticket carefully. Some trains stop at both — in that case, choose whichever is closer to your destination in the city.

Facilities

  • Platform stalls: Poha-jalebi (Bhopal's quintessential breakfast combo) — ₹30–40
  • Food court: North Indian thali ₹80–100
  • Outside: Hamidia Road is Bhopal's street food paradise. Chatori Gali (near the station) has chaat, kebabs, and the famous Bhopali paan.
If you have time, Manohar Dairy on Hamidia Road serves excellent milk cake and samosas. It's a 5-minute walk from the station.

Medical

First aid center on platform 1. Hamidia Hospital is 1 km away. Tip 1: Bhopal Junction is a junction, not a terminus. Trains approach from both Delhi (north) and Chennai/Hyderabad (south) directions. Know which side your train will arrive on. Tip 2: If you're visiting Bhopal's lakes and new city areas, Rani Kamlapati station is actually more convenient. BPL is in the congested old city, while Rani Kamlapati is near MP Nagar and the modern commercial zones. Tip 3: Bhopal is a good base for day trips to Sanchi (45 km) and Bhimbetka (46 km). Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Trains to Sanchi take about an hour from BPL. Tip 4: Winter fog (December-January) causes significant delays on the Delhi-Bhopal route. Trains from Delhi can arrive 2–6 hours late. Check IndianRail.app for real-time tracking before heading to the station.
