KSR Bangalore City — named after Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna, station code SBC — is Bengaluru's main railway terminus. It sits in the Majestic area, one of the most chaotic, high-energy parts of the city. Ten platforms handle everything from the daily Shatabdi to Mysuru to overnight trains to Delhi and Mumbai.

If you're coming to Bengaluru by train, this is almost certainly where you'll arrive. Here's what you need to know.

Station Layout

SBC has 10 platforms. The station is relatively compact compared to giants like Howrah or NDLS, but the surrounding Majestic area adds layers of confusion.

PlatformsTypical Trains
1–3Rajdhani, Shatabdi, premium services
4–7Long-distance trains (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata)
8–10Intercity and shorter distance (Mysuru, Hubli, Salem)
The main entrance is on Gubbi Thotadappa Road, facing the Kempegowda Bus Station (Majestic Bus Stand). There's a rear entrance on Dhanvantri Road that's useful if you're coming from the Cottonpet side.

Getting To and From SBC

By Metro

Kempegowda Metro Station (interchange of Purple and Green Lines) is directly adjacent to the railway station. A covered walkway connects the metro station to the railway station entrance — about a 4-minute walk. This is hands-down the best way to reach SBC from most parts of Bengaluru.

Purple Line takes you to MG Road, Indiranagar, and Whitefield. Green Line goes to Yeshwanthpur, Nagasandra, and Yelachenahalli.

By Bus

Kempegowda Bus Station (Majestic) is right across the road — 200 meters from the station entrance. BMTC city buses and KSRTC long-distance buses all stop here. If you're coming from the airport by bus, the Vayu Vajra airport shuttle (BMTC) drops you at Majestic.

By Auto/Taxi

Prepaid auto booth is outside the main entrance on the right side.

Typical fares:

  • SBC to MG Road: ₹100–130 (auto)

  • SBC to Electronic City: ₹400–500 (cab)

  • SBC to Whitefield: ₹450–550 (cab)

  • SBC to Kempegowda Airport: ₹700–900 (cab), or take the Vayu Vajra bus for ₹300

Ola/Uber pickup is better from the Dhanvantri Road side entrance where there's less congestion.

By Yeshwanthpur Station

Some trains to/from Bengaluru use Yeshwanthpur (YPR) instead of SBC. Check your ticket — if it says YPR, you need Yeshwanthpur station, which is 8 km northwest. Metro Green Line connects SBC (Kempegowda station) to Yeshwanthpur station directly.

Facilities

Waiting Rooms

  • General waiting hall: Ground floor, main building. Crowded but functional.
  • AC waiting room: First floor above platform 1. Same-day confirmed ticket required. Has charging points.
  • Upper-class lounge: First floor, separate entry for 2AC/1AC passengers.
  • IRCTC Lounge: Near platform 1. ₹150 for a few hours. AC, WiFi, tea/coffee.

Food

Platform 1 has a small food court with a Cafe Coffee Day outlet (this is Bengaluru after all), plus Indian snacks and meals counters. A veg thali costs ₹80–120.

Outside the station, the Majestic area has hundreds of small eateries. For something specific:

  • Vidyarthi Bhavan (Gandhi Bazaar, 4 km): Legendary masala dosa. Worth the auto ride if you have time.

  • CTR (Central Tiffin Room) (Malleshwaram, 3 km): Another iconic dosa spot.

  • Immediately near the station, Hotel Janatha on Tank Bund Road does reliable South Indian breakfast.

WiFi

RailWire WiFi available. Connect to "RailWire," OTP verification. Signal is decent across all 10 platforms.

ATMs

Canara Bank and SBI ATMs inside the station. More ATM options on Gubbi Thotadappa Road outside.

Medical

First aid center on platform 1. Victoria Hospital is 1.5 km away for emergencies. The Majestic area is confusing even for Bengaluru residents. The bus stand, metro station, and railway station are all clustered together with multiple levels and pedestrian pathways. Follow signage carefully. If someone offers to "guide" you for a fee, ignore them — the walkways are straightforward once you find the right signboard. SBC is a terminus station — trains end here, so there's no "wrong direction" to worry about. Trains pull in and stop. All platforms face the same direction toward the concourse. Platforms are shorter than at major northern stations, and the walk from the concourse to your coach is usually manageable. Still, check the coach position chart before heading down the platform. If you're catching an early morning train (5–7 AM), the Majestic area can feel deserted and dodgy. Stick to well-lit areas and the main entrance. The station itself is staffed 24/7.

For real-time train status and platform updates, IndianRail.app saves you from staring at the crowded display boards.

Cloak Room

Located near platform 1. Open 6 AM–10 PM. ₹30/bag for 24 hours. Ticket required, X-ray scan. If you want to explore Bengaluru for a few hours before your evening train, this is useful.

Bengaluru City vs Bengaluru Cantonment

Bengaluru Cantonment (BNC) is a smaller station 4 km northeast of SBC. Some trains pass through BNC without going to SBC. If your ticket says BNC, you need Cantonment, not City. An auto between the two costs about ₹80.

There's also Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVB), Bengaluru's newest terminal near Baiyappanahalli. More on that in a separate guide.

Retiring Rooms

Available on first floor, near platform 1. AC rooms cost ₹700–1000 for 12 hours. Book through IRCTC or the counter. They're small but clean enough for a few hours' rest.

Nearby Places

  • Tipu Sultan's Palace: 1 km, walking distance
  • Bengaluru Fort: 1 km
  • Lalbagh Botanical Garden: 3 km, ₹50 auto
  • Cubbon Park: 3 km, ₹60 auto
  • MG Road/Brigade Road: 4 km, metro (Purple Line, 3 stops)
