Ayodhya Dham Junction — station code AY, formerly Ayodhya Junction — has been transformed from a modest small-town station into one of India's most impressive redeveloped railway facilities. The massive redevelopment was completed ahead of the Ram Mandir consecration in January 2024, and the result is a station that matches the grandeur of the temple it now serves.

The new station is designed in a temple-inspired architectural style, with sandstone-colored finishes, ornate pillars, and design elements drawn from Ram Mandir itself. It's one of the largest and most ambitious station redevelopment projects in the country.

What Changed

The old Ayodhya station was a basic, small-town station with minimal facilities. The redeveloped version features:

  • Temple-inspired architecture with Nagara-style design elements
  • Massive concourse area capable of handling large pilgrim volumes
  • Multiple entry/exit points to manage crowd flow
  • Escalators and elevators to all platforms
  • Air-conditioned waiting halls
  • Solar panels on the roof
  • Expanded platform count and length for longer trains

Station Layout

The redeveloped station has 5 platforms.

Multiple entrance gates designed for high-volume pilgrim movement. The main entrance faces the city side, with clear pathways toward the Ram Mandir area.

Facilities

Waiting Areas

Air-conditioned waiting halls — spacious and modern. Built to handle large pilgrim volumes, especially during religious festivals (Ram Navami, Diwali, Kartik Purnima).

Food

  • Station food court: Vegetarian options — North Indian thali, chaat, snacks, sweets. Ayodhya is a holy city with predominantly vegetarian food.
  • Platform stalls: Chai, samosa, puri-sabzi
  • Outside: The town has simple eateries serving pure vegetarian food. Don't expect fancy restaurants — Ayodhya is a pilgrimage town.

WiFi

Free WiFi available at the station.

ATMs

SBI ATMs inside the station.

Accessibility

Full accessibility features — elevators, ramps, tactile paths, accessible restrooms. The redevelopment was designed with pilgrim accessibility as a priority.

Security

Enhanced security presence given the station's proximity to the Ram Mandir. Expect bag scans and security checks. Tip 1: Ram Mandir is about 3 km from the station. Auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws provide the connection. The route is well-marked with signage. Tip 2: Peak pilgrimage times are Ram Navami (March-April), Diwali (October-November), and the anniversary of the temple consecration (January). The station and city get overwhelmed during these periods. Book trains and accommodation weeks in advance. Tip 3: Ayodhya is a small town that's rapidly growing. Infrastructure beyond the station and temple is still developing. Don't expect the amenities of a large city. Tip 4: Saryu Ghat is where pilgrims take a ritual bath. It's 2 km from the station and beautifully renovated with new ghats and lighting. The evening aarti at Saryu Ghat is worth attending. Tip 5: The Ayodhya circuit includes Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, and Saryu Ghat. All are within 3 km of each other and can be covered on foot or by e-rickshaw.

Check train availability and live status on IndianRail.app — Ayodhya trains have been heavily booked since the temple opening.
