Prayagraj Junction — station code PRYJ, formerly Allahabad Junction — is the main station for one of India's most sacred cities. Prayagraj sits at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. During Kumbh Mela (held every 12 years) and Magh Mela (annual), this station becomes one of the busiest in the country, handling millions of pilgrims.

The station sits on the Howrah-Delhi mainline, making it a major junction for both religious and regular travelers. It's also a critical educational hub — the University of Allahabad and several competitive exam centers bring steady student traffic.

Station Layout

Prayagraj Junction has 10 platforms.

ATMs

SBI, PNB, and Allahabad Bank (now Indian Bank) ATMs inside and nearby. Tip 1: During Kumbh Mela and Magh Mela, this station operates in emergency mode. Extra platforms, temporary shelters, and shuttle services are set up. Arrive hours early, follow the special crowd management signage, and be prepared for intense crowds. Tip 2: Sangam (the confluence) is 7 km from the station. Boats to the actual Sangam point cost ₹50–100 per person (negotiable). The experience of being at the meeting of two rivers is genuinely moving. Tip 3: Prayagraj is on the Howrah-Delhi mainline, so most east-west trains stop here. It's a natural break-journey point if you're covering the Varanasi-Lucknow-Delhi corridor. Tip 4: The station has been renovated recently and is much better than it used to be. New escalators, digital signage, and cleaner platforms.
