Ahmedabad Junction — station code ADI — is Gujarat's busiest railway station and the headquarters of the Western Railway's Ahmedabad Division. With 12 platforms and connections to virtually every major city in India, it's the nerve center of rail travel in western India.

The station is located in Kalupur, in the old city area of Ahmedabad. The surroundings are dense, bustling, and very Gujarati — expect heavy foot traffic, auto-rickshaws everywhere, and the smell of street food the moment you step out.

Station Layout

ADI has 12 platforms arranged in a north-south orientation. The main building faces east, toward Kalupur Road.

PlatformsTypical Services
1–4Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat
5–8Long-distance mail/express (Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata)
9–12Regional and intercity trains (Saurashtra, Kutch, Rajasthan)
The station has two main entry points: the main entrance on Kalupur Road and a rear entrance on the western side near Sarangpur.

Getting To and From ADI

By Metro

Ahmedabad Metro's Blue Line has a station at Kalupur, which is within walking distance of the railway station. The metro connects to Thaltej, Doordarshan Kendra, and other western Ahmedabad areas. Fares range ₹10–30.

By BRTS

Ahmedabad's Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) has a stop near the station. Routes connect to SG Highway, Naroda, Maninagar, and other parts of the city. BRTS is efficient and cheap — ₹7–20.

By Auto

Prepaid auto stand is outside the main entrance. CNG autos are the norm in Ahmedabad. Typical fares:
  • ADI to SG Highway: ₹100–150
  • ADI to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport: ₹200–300
  • ADI to Gandhinagar: ₹250–350
  • ADI to Sabarmati Ashram: ₹60–80

By Car/Cab

Ola and Uber are available. Pickup is easier from the western side entrance. Traffic in the Kalupur area is heavy during business hours — plan accordingly.

Facilities

Waiting Rooms

The AC waiting room is on the first floor near platform 1 — requires a confirmed same-day ticket. Upper-class waiting room is in the same building, reserved for 2AC/1AC passengers. Both have charging points.

The general waiting hall is on the ground floor. It's large but can get packed during festival season.

Food

Gujarat is a vegetarian-dominant state, and the station food reflects this. You'll find excellent dhokla, khandvi, thepla, and Gujarati thali options:
  • Food court (near platform 1): Gujarati thali ₹80–120, unlimited refills
  • Platform stalls: Samosas, chai, cold drinks, packaged snacks
  • IRCTC vending machines: Platforms 1 and 5
Outside, Kalupur area has legendary street food. Manek Chowk (2 km away) is one of Ahmedabad's best food streets — open evenings and late nights.

For a sit-down option, Gopi Dining Hall near Relief Road (1.5 km) serves one of the best Gujarati thalis in the city.

WiFi

RailWire WiFi available station-wide. OTP verification. Good coverage on platforms 1–8.

ATMs

Bank of Baroda, SBI, and PNB ATMs inside the station. HDFC and ICICI outside on Kalupur Road.

Medical

First aid center on platform 1. VS Hospital is 2 km from the station. Tip 1: ADI is a junction, not a terminus. Trains arrive from both directions. Pay attention to which side of the platform your train will arrive on — the display boards show this clearly. Tip 2: If you're heading to Saurashtra (Rajkot, Jamnagar, Dwarka, Somnath), many trains originate from ADI, so they'll be sitting at the platform well before departure. Arrive early and settle in. Tip 3: The Kalupur area floods during heavy monsoon rains (July–August). The road outside the station can become waterlogged. Allow extra time for transport during monsoon months. Tip 4: Ahmedabad is a dry state — no alcohol is served anywhere in the station or the city. If you're arriving from Mumbai and expecting a beer, you're out of luck. Gujarat has strict prohibition. Tip 5: Use IndianRail.app for live train status. ADI sees heavy traffic and delays can cascade, especially during Navratri and Diwali seasons when extra festival trains pack the schedule.

Ahmedabad vs Sabarmati and Gandhinagar

Some trains now stop at or originate from Sabarmati Junction (SBI), 5 km north, or Gandhinagar Capital (GNCD), 25 km away. Gandhinagar Capital is a newly upgraded station with premium facilities. Always check your ticket for the station code.

Cloak Room

Platform 1, ground floor. Open 5 AM to midnight. ₹30 per bag. Valid ticket and X-ray scan required. If you want to explore Ahmedabad's old city — Jama Masjid, the pols, Calico Museum — before your train, this is useful.

Retiring Rooms

Available on the first floor. AC rooms ₹700–900 for 12 hours. Book via IRCTC or at the counter. They get booked up fast during Navratri (October) and Uttarayan (January).

Nearby Landmarks

  • Sabarmati Ashram: 5 km, ₹60 auto — Gandhi's famous ashram
  • Jama Masjid: 1.5 km, walking distance from the old city entrance
  • Adalaj Stepwell: 18 km, cab only
  • Law Garden: 5 km, known for street food and handicraft stalls
  • Kankaria Lake: 5 km, family-friendly evening spot
