Vaishno Devi is India's most visited pilgrimage site — over 8 million devotees make the trek annually. The shrine sits at 5,200 feet in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu & Kashmir. The nearest railway station is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), which is the terminus of the railway line from Udhampur. Getting here by train requires understanding the route options, because Katra only recently got rail connectivity.

Katra Station — The New Gateway

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) station is relatively new — the rail link to Katra was completed as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Previously, pilgrims had to take a train to Jammu Tawi and then a bus or taxi for the remaining 50 km to Katra.

Now, direct trains run to Katra from Delhi and other cities. The station is well-equipped with a waiting hall, cloak room (essential for storing luggage during the yatra), and prepaid auto/taxi service.

From Katra station, the Vaishno Devi trek starting point (Ban Ganga) is about 2 km. Shared autos run frequently (₹20).

From Delhi — Best Options

Vande Bharat Express: The fastest at about 8 hours. Departs NDLS early morning, arrives Katra by afternoon. This gives you time to start the trek the same evening or rest and begin the next morning. Shri Shakti Express: Overnight option. Departs Delhi at 8 PM, arrives Katra by 8:30 AM next morning. Good timing — you arrive rested and ready for the yatra. Jammu Mail + Bus/Taxi: If direct Katra trains are sold out, take any train to Jammu Tawi (JAT), then take a bus (2 hours, ₹100) or shared taxi (₹200-300) to Katra. This two-stage approach gives you more train options since Jammu has far more rail connectivity.

From Mumbai and South India

There's no direct express train from Mumbai to Katra that's genuinely fast. The options involve 24-28 hour journeys through the heartland. The Swaraj Express and other Delhi-Jammu trains can be boarded at intermediate stations.

Practical advice: For Mumbai and South India travelers, fly to Jammu airport (direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore) and then take a bus/taxi to Katra. Or fly to Delhi and take the Vande Bharat to Katra.

The Yatra — Trek Details

The Vaishno Devi trek from Ban Ganga (Katra) to the Bhawan (shrine) is 13 km one way. Here's what to expect:

Registration: Mandatory at the Yatra Registration Counter in Katra. Available online through the Shrine Board website or in person. You receive a yatra slip with an assigned time slot. The trek: A paved, well-maintained path with regular refreshment stalls, rest areas, and toilet facilities. The gradient is moderate but continuous — it's an uphill walk for 13 km. Average time: 5-7 hours up, 3-4 hours down. Transport options:
  • Walk: Free (most people do this)
  • Ponies/Palki: Available for those who can't walk. ₹1,500-3,000 one way.
  • Helicopter: Katra to Sanjichhat (9 km uphill), ₹1,800 one way. Saves significant climbing. Book through the Shrine Board.
The cave shrine: The Bhawan houses three natural rock formations (pindis) representing the three forms of the Goddess. The darshan takes about 15-30 minutes once you're inside.

When to Go

March-May: Spring rush. Weather is pleasant for trekking. Moderate crowds. June-July: Summer peak + Navratri (if it falls in this period). Heaviest crowds — daily numbers can exceed 50,000. Wait times at the Bhawan stretch to several hours. October-November: Navratri pilgrimage season. Second busiest period. December-February: Cold and occasionally snowy. The trek can be icy. Fewer crowds.

Accommodation in Katra

The Shrine Board operates dharamshalas (pilgrim rest houses) at Katra and along the trek route. These are basic but clean and very cheap (₹50-500). Book through the Shrine Board website.

Private hotels in Katra range from ₹500 budget rooms to ₹3,000 mid-range. The hotels along the main bazaar are close to the trek starting point.

Luggage and Essentials

  • Travel light. You're walking 26 km (round trip). Every kilogram matters.
  • Cloak rooms at Katra station and the Shrine Board office store excess luggage (₹20-50 per bag).
  • Essential packing: Warm jacket (it's cold at the Bhawan, even in summer), rain gear, water bottle, energy snacks, comfortable walking shoes, small flashlight.
  • No leather items inside the Bhawan area. Leave leather belts, wallets, and bags at the cloak room.

Booking Tips

  • Book trains 120 days ahead during Navratri season. The Delhi-Katra route is heavily contested.
  • Tatkal is an option but extremely competitive during festival periods.
  • The return train from Katra: book before starting the yatra. You don't want to be scrambling for tickets after an exhausting trek.
  • Jai Mata Di! — the greeting you'll hear thousands of times during the yatra. Return it with enthusiasm.
