Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is nestled at 2,240 meters in the Nilgiri Hills — the "Queen of Hill Stations." The only rail approach is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam, India's only rack railway. This heritage line is the reason many travelers choose the train over the bus or car to reach Ooty.

The Classic Connection: Nilgiri Express + Toy Train

The system is designed as a relay:

  1. Nilgiri Express (12671) from Chennai Central — departs 9:10 PM
  2. Arrives Mettupalayam 6:15 AM
  3. NMR Toy Train at 7:10 AM — same station, walk across platforms
  4. Arrives Ooty 12:15 PM
This overnight-plus-morning combination has worked for over a century. The Nilgiri Express is specifically timed to feed into the NMR departure.

From Bangalore

No direct train connection to Mettupalayam is ideal from Bangalore. Options:

Route A: Bangalore → Coimbatore by overnight train (8-9 hours) → Coimbatore → Mettupalayam by local train (1 hour) → NMR to Ooty Route B: Bangalore → Mysore → Ooty by bus (takes 6-7 hours via Bandipur forest) Route C: Fly Bangalore to Coimbatore (45 min) → taxi/train to Mettupalayam → NMR to Ooty

From Coimbatore

Coimbatore is 38 km from Mettupalayam. Local trains run several times daily (1 hour, ₹15). Alternatively, buses from Coimbatore Gandhipuram go directly to Ooty (3 hours, ₹80-150) — this bypasses the toy train but is faster and more frequent.

Mettupalayam Station

A small town station at the foot of the Nilgiris. The NMR platform is within the same station complex as the mainline platforms. When the Nilgiri Express arrives, look for signs directing you to the narrow-gauge platform.

If you miss the NMR: Buses to Ooty depart from just outside the station every 30 minutes (3.5 hours, ₹80). Not as romantic as the toy train but reliable.

The NMR Journey

The 46-km climb takes about 5 hours. The steam locomotive pushes the train from behind through dense shola forests, over bridges spanning deep ravines, and past waterfalls. The Mettupalayam-Coonoor section uses the rack-and-pinion system for the steepest gradients. See our dedicated Nilgiri Mountain Railway guide for the full experience.

Alternative: Bus to Ooty

If NMR tickets are sold out (which happens frequently May-June), the bus alternatives are:

FromDurationFrequencyCost
Coimbatore3-3.5 hoursEvery 30 min₹80-200
Bangalore6-7 hours4-5 daily₹500-1,000
Mysore3-4 hoursSeveral daily₹200-400
Mettupalayam2.5-3 hoursEvery 30 min₹60-150
The bus route from Mettupalayam/Coimbatore climbs through 36 hairpin bends on the Coonoor Ghat road. The views are excellent but the curves are aggressive — take motion sickness medication if needed.

Ooty Highlights

  • Botanical Gardens: 22 hectares of curated gardens. The 20-million-year-old fossil tree trunk is the star exhibit.
  • Ooty Lake: Boating (₹30-300). Nice in the evening.
  • Doddabetta Peak: Highest point in the Nilgiris (2,637m). 10 km from Ooty. Panoramic views.
  • Tea Factory visits: Multiple estates offer tours. The Ooty tea is a distinct variety.
  • Nilgiri tahr spotting: Eravikulam National Park (technically in Munnar, but the tahr can be spotted in the Nilgiri grasslands too).

Coonoor — Worth a Stop

Coonoor (1,930m) is 19 km before Ooty and is often more pleasant — less crowded, better maintained, excellent tea gardens. The Highfield Tea Factory offers guided tours. Sim's Park is a beautifully maintained botanical garden.

If you're doing the NMR, consider stopping at Coonoor for a night, exploring, then continuing to Ooty the next day by NMR or bus.

Best Season

April-June: Peak tourist season. Schools are closed, families flock. NMR sells out. Book months ahead. September-November: Post-monsoon. Green, pleasant, fewer crowds. Best for photography. December-February: Cool (5-15°C). Morning frost. Quiet. Good value on accommodation. Neelakurinji bloom: The rare Neelakurinji flower blooms once every 12 years, carpeting the hills in blue-purple. Next bloom: 2030.

Tips

  • NMR tickets sell out fast during April-June. Book the moment the 120-day window opens on indianrail.app.
  • Carry warm clothes. Ooty at 2,240m is cool year-round. Winter mornings can be near freezing.
  • Homemade chocolate: Ooty is famous for handmade chocolates. King Star and other shops on Commercial Road sell them.
  • The return NMR departs Ooty at 2 PM, connecting with the evening Nilgiri Express to Chennai (departs Mettupalayam 6:30 PM, arrives Chennai 5:30 AM).
