Honestly, Delhi to Ernakulam by train takes 2 full days. Flying to Kochi (Cochin International Airport) is far more practical. From Kochi, it's a 4-hour taxi/bus to Munnar.

From Bangalore (470 km to Munnar)

By train to Ernakulam: Several overnight trains (10-12 hours). Then road to Munnar. By train to Madurai: Overnight (12 hours). Then road to Munnar via Theni. By road: Direct buses Bangalore-Munnar run overnight (9-10 hours, ₹700-1,200).

From Chennai (600 km to Munnar)

Train to Madurai (8-9 hours) → bus/taxi to Munnar via Theni (4-5 hours). The Madurai route enters Munnar from the Tamil Nadu side through the Bodimettu Ghat — a spectacular mountain road.

Alternatively, train to Aluva/Ernakulam (12-14 hours) → road to Munnar.

The Road to Munnar

From Aluva/Ernakulam (Kerala side):

The road climbs from the coast through rubber plantations, then spice gardens (cardamom, pepper), and finally enters the tea country. The last 2 hours are mountain switchbacks with increasing altitude and decreasing temperature. Views open up at Munnar Gap — the first sight of the tea-carpeted hills is spectacular. Transport: KSRTC buses from Ernakulam (every 30-60 minutes, ₹150-200, 4.5 hours). Taxis cost ₹2,500-4,000.

From Madurai (Tamil Nadu side):

Via Theni and Bodimettu. The Bodimettu Ghat section is steeper and more dramatic — the road climbs 1,500 meters in about 40 km of switchbacks. Not for the motion-sick prone. But the views into the Tamil Nadu plains below are extraordinary. Transport: Buses from Madurai Periyar bus stand (4-5 hours, ₹150-200). Taxis ₹3,000-4,000.

Munnar — What Awaits

  • Tea plantations: Kolukkumalai Tea Estate has the world's highest tea plantation. Tata Tea Museum in Munnar town covers tea history. Plantation walks are available.
  • Eravikulam National Park: Home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr (mountain goat). The park offers guided walks through shola grasslands with panoramic views.
  • Top Station: The highest point in Munnar (1,880m). On clear mornings, you can see into Tamil Nadu. The view at dawn is breathtaking.
  • Mattupetty Dam: Lake with boating, surrounded by tea gardens. Echo Point nearby.
  • Anamudi Peak: South India's highest peak (2,695m). Visible from multiple viewpoints in Munnar. Trekking permitted with permits.

Best Season

September to March: Ideal. Cool weather (10-20°C), clear views, tea harvesting in progress. April-May: Warmer but still pleasant. The Neelakurinji flowers bloom once every 12 years (next: 2030). June-August: Monsoon. Heavy rain, leeches on trails, mist obscures views. But the green is extraordinary and waterfalls are at their best.

Tips

  • Carry warm clothes. Munnar nights can drop to 5°C, even in October.
  • Book accommodation in advance during December-January and long weekends. Munnar is heavily visited by Kerala and Tamil Nadu tourists.
  • The road has hairpin bends. If you're prone to motion sickness, take medication before starting the mountain drive. Sit in front.
  • Mobile network is patchy in parts of Munnar. Download offline maps.
