Nearest Railway Station to Manali — How to Reach by Train
Find the nearest railway station to Manali and plan your train + road journey. Options from Delhi, Chandigarh, and Mumbai with connecting bus and taxi details.
Manali has no railway station — it sits at 2,050 meters in the Kullu Valley, far from any rail line. The nearest railway stations are Chandigarh (310 km), Ambala (350 km), and Pathankot (285 km). From any of these, you need a bus or taxi through the mountains to reach Manali. Here's how to plan the train-plus-road combination.
Nearest Stations to Manali
| Station | Distance to Manali | Road Time | Why Choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chandigarh (CDG) | 310 km | 8-10 hours | Best connected from Delhi, good bus hub |
| Ambala (UMB) | 350 km | 9-11 hours | Junction station, more train options |

| Jogindernagar (JDNX) | 165 km | 5-6 hours | Nearest narrow gauge, via Kangra Valley |
Recommended Route: Delhi → Chandigarh → Manali
This is the most popular approach:
Step 1: Delhi to Chandigarh by Train- Shatabdi Express: 3.5 hours, ₹700-1,500
- Vande Bharat (if available): ~3 hours
- Multiple daily options (see our Delhi-Chandigarh guide)
- HRTC Volvo bus: 8-9 hours, ₹800-1,200. Departs from ISBT Sector 43. Multiple daily services including overnight.
- Private Volvo buses: Similar timing, ₹900-1,500. Book on RedBus.
- Taxi: ₹5,000-8,000 one way. 7-8 hours. Faster and door-to-door.
Alternative: Delhi Overnight Bus (Skip the Train)
Honestly, many Delhi-Manali travelers skip the train entirely and take a direct overnight Volvo bus from Delhi ISBT Kashmere Gate to Manali. It takes 12-14 hours, costs ₹1,000-2,000, and departs around 5-7 PM, arriving Manali next morning.
The bus is more direct but less comfortable than a train+bus combination. The highway from Delhi through Haryana and Punjab is flat and boring — the scenic part starts only after Mandi (3-4 hours before Manali).
The Scenic Alternative: Jogindernagar Route
For train enthusiasts, here's a special option:
- Take a train to Pathankot
- Board the Kangra Valley Railway toy train to Jogindernagar (10 hours of stunning Dhauladhar mountain scenery)
- Bus from Jogindernagar to Manali via Mandi (5-6 hours)
The Road to Manali
Whichever station you start from, the last leg to Manali is a mountain road experience:
Chandigarh to Manali route: Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Sundernagar → Mandi → Kullu → Manali. The road follows the Beas River from Mandi onwards — stunning valley views, orchards, and the river rapids below. Key stop — Mandi: The "gateway to the Kullu Valley." A good lunch stop. The town has ancient temples and decent restaurants. Kullu to Manali (40 km): The final stretch through the Kullu Valley is gorgeous — apple orchards, deodar forests, and the Beas River rushing alongside. Manali appears suddenly as the valley widens.Atal Tunnel (Rohtang Tunnel)
If you're going beyond Manali to Lahaul-Spiti, the Atal Tunnel (opened 2020) at 10,000 feet cuts through the Pir Panjal range and saves hours of driving over the Rohtang Pass. It's the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet (9.02 km). Even if Spiti isn't on your itinerary, driving through the tunnel is an experience.
Best Season
April-June: Peak season. Snow melting, pleasant days (15-25°C), all roads open. July-September: Monsoon. Landslides, road closures common. Risky. October-November: Post-monsoon. Clear views, autumn colors. Rohtang may close. December-March: Snow season. Manali in snow is beautiful. Solang Valley skiing. Roads can be treacherous.Tips
- Book return transport before going. Manali to Delhi buses/taxis fill up fast on Sundays.
- Altitude sickness is rarely an issue in Manali (2,050m), but if you're going to Rohtang/Spiti (3,978m+), acclimatize.
- Old Manali is the backpacker area — cafes, hostels, river views. Mall Road Manali is the main tourist area.
- Hadimba Temple: Ancient wooden temple in a deodar forest. Must-visit.
