Leh, the capital of Ladakh, sits at 3,500 meters in a high-altitude desert between the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges. There's no railway anywhere near Leh — the nearest mainline stations are hundreds of kilometers away, and the road connections involve some of the world's highest motorable passes. Getting to Leh is part of the adventure.

Nearest Railway Stations

StationDistance to LehRoad TimeRoute
Jammu Tawi (JAT)700 km2 daysVia Srinagar, Zoji La, Kargil
Chandigarh (CDG)800+ km2 daysVia Manali, Rohtang, Tanglang La
Pathankot (PTK)750 km2 daysVia Keylong or Srinagar
Neither station is "near" Leh. Both routes involve 2-day drives through extreme mountain terrain at altitudes exceeding 4,000-5,300 meters.

Route 1: Via Manali (Chandigarh Connection)

Train: Delhi → Chandigarh by Shatabdi (3.5 hours) Road: Chandigarh → Manali (10 hours by bus/taxi) → Leh (1-2 days)

The Manali-Leh Highway (473 km from Manali) is one of the world's most legendary road trips:

Manali → Rohtang Pass (3,979m) → Gramphu → Keylong → Baralacha La (4,890m) → Sarchu → Lachalung La (5,059m) → Pang → Tanglang La (5,328m) → Upshi → Leh

Highlights: Five passes above 4,000m, including Tanglang La at 5,328m. The landscape shifts from Himalayan green (Manali) to high-altitude desert (Ladakh). Moonland near Lamayuru. The magnetic hill. The confluence of Indus and Zanskar rivers. Duration: 2 days with overnight stop at Sarchu or Keylong. Some hardy travelers do it in 1 day (15-17 hours non-stop) but this risks altitude sickness. Season: June to September only. Rohtang Pass closes in winter. The Atal Tunnel bypasses Rohtang now, extending the season slightly.

Route 2: Via Srinagar (Jammu Tawi Connection)

Train: Delhi → Jammu Tawi by Rajdhani (10 hours) Road: Jammu → Srinagar (8-10 hours) → Leh (2 days)

The Srinagar-Leh Highway (434 km from Srinagar):

Srinagar → Sonamarg → Zoji La (3,528m) → Drass → Kargil → Lamayuru → Leh

Highlights: Zoji La pass (gateway to Ladakh), Drass (second coldest inhabited place on earth), the Kargil War Memorial, Lamayuru Moonland, and the descent into the Indus Valley. Duration: 2 days with overnight at Kargil. The road is better-maintained than Manali-Leh and at lower altitude, making it more accessible. Season: May/June to October. Zoji La closes in winter.

Altitude Acclimatization — This Is Serious

Leh is at 3,500m. The passes en route exceed 5,000m. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real and potentially dangerous condition.

Rules:
  • Spend at least 1 night at an intermediate altitude before reaching Leh
  • First day in Leh: REST. Don't exert yourself. Drink water. No alcohol.
  • Day 2: Light walking. Still take it easy.
  • Day 3: You can start exploring.
  • If you get headaches, nausea, or breathlessness that doesn't improve, descend immediately.
Flying directly to Leh (from Delhi, 1.5 hours) puts you at 3,500m instantly. The road journey, while longer, acclimatizes you gradually. This is a genuine health advantage of the road approach.

Leh Highlights

  • Pangong Tso: The famous blue lake at 4,350m. 150 km from Leh, requires Inner Line Permit.
  • Nubra Valley: Via Khardung La (one of the world's highest motorable passes). Diskit Monastery, Hunder sand dunes, double-humped camels.
  • Magnetic Hill: An optical illusion where cars appear to roll uphill.
  • Hemis, Thiksey, Shey: Ancient Buddhist monasteries with stunning architecture.
  • Zanskar Valley: For the truly adventurous. Remote, stunning, and still relatively untouched.

Permit Information

Inner Line Permit (ILP): Required for Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley, and some other areas. Available in Leh from the DC office or through local travel agents. Process takes a few hours.

Practical Tips

  • Book return transport early. Leh has limited outbound capacity in peak season.
  • Carry cash. ATMs in Leh are unreliable. Cards work at larger hotels but not at smaller guesthouses.
  • Pack layers. Leh temperatures: 25°C day, 5°C night in summer. Winter drops to -25°C.
  • Fuel up. Petrol pumps are scarce between Manali and Leh. Fill up at every opportunity.
