Darjeeling sits at 2,042 meters in the Eastern Himalayas — a compact hill town famous for its tea, the toy train, and those magical mornings when Kanchenjunga appears above the clouds. There's no mainline railway to Darjeeling; you reach New Jalpaiguri (NJP) by mainline train and then climb to Darjeeling by toy train, jeep, or taxi.

Step 1: Reach NJP

NJP is the gateway station. See our detailed Kolkata-Siliguri guide for complete train options from Kolkata (Darjeeling Mail, Vande Bharat, etc.).

From Delhi: Rajdhani or express trains, 20-26 hours. Or fly to Bagdogra Airport (14 km from NJP) — 2.5 hours. From Kolkata: Darjeeling Mail (10 hours overnight), Vande Bharat (7.5 hours daytime). Multiple daily options.

Step 2: NJP to Darjeeling (88 km)

Toy train: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage ride — 7-8 hours of loops, zigzags, and tea garden scenery. See our dedicated DHR guide. Book in advance; limited seats. Shared jeep: The practical choice. Jeep stands are outside NJP station. Vehicles leave when full (10 passengers). The 3-hour drive climbs through Kurseong and tea gardens. Mountain road — expect curves.

Darjeeling Highlights

  • Tiger Hill sunrise: Kanchenjunga at dawn. One of the great Himalayan spectacles. Shared jeep at 4 AM from Chowrasta.
  • Tea garden visits: Happy Valley Tea Estate (walkable from town). See plucking, processing, tasting.
  • Batasia Loop: The DHR toy train spirals here with Kanchenjunga as backdrop. Also accessible by road.
  • Peace Pagoda: Japanese Buddhist temple with mountain views.
  • Mall Road/Chowrasta: The heart of Darjeeling. Bookshops, colonial architecture, mountain views.

Best Season

October-November: Post-monsoon clarity. Kanchenjunga visible most mornings. The best month. March-May: Spring. Warmer, flowers blooming, but hazy. December-February: Cold (0-10°C). Occasional snow. Fewer tourists. June-September: Monsoon. Heavy rain, landslides, clouds. Toy train disruptions.

Tips

  • The Darjeeling Mail from Sealdah (depart 10 PM, arrive NJP 8 AM) connects perfectly with the DHR toy train (depart NJP 8:30 AM). When both are on time, it's seamless.
  • Altitude adjustment: 2,042m isn't extreme, but if you're coming from sea-level Kolkata, take it easy the first day.
  • Carry warm clothes even in summer — Darjeeling evenings require a jacket.
  • Book return transport before going. NJP-bound jeeps and trains fill up on Sundays.
