Shirdi, home of the Sai Baba temple, is one of India's most visited pilgrimage destinations with over 60,000 daily visitors. The town got its own railway station — Sainagar Shirdi (SNSI) — in 2009, which made rail access significantly easier. Previously, pilgrims had to travel to Manmad or Kopargaon and then take a bus.

Sainagar Shirdi Station

The station is about 3 km from the Sai Baba Temple complex. Shared autos and buses run frequently (₹10-20). Private autos charge ₹50-100. The station has basic waiting rooms and food stalls.

Temple Darshan

The Sai Baba Samadhi Mandir (main temple) is open from 4 AM to 10:30 PM. Darshan is free.

Queue management: The temple uses a token system. Collect a token from the counter (free, available from 4 AM). The token has a time slot. Return during your slot and the wait is usually 30-60 minutes. Without a token during peak times, expect 3-5 hour waits. Aarti timings (these are highlights):
  • 4:30 AM — Kakad Aarti (dawn ceremony)
  • 12:00 PM — Madhyanha Aarti (noon)
  • 6:30 PM — Dhoop Aarti (evening)
  • 10:30 PM — Shej Aarti (night, closing ceremony)
The Kakad Aarti (4:30 AM) is the most special — limited devotees allowed, incredibly atmospheric. Apply through the Sai Baba Sansthan Trust website in advance.

Accommodation

The Sai Baba Sansthan Trust operates dharamshalas (pilgrim lodges) with rooms from ₹100-1,500. Book through their website. Private hotels in Shirdi range from ₹500 to ₹3,000. During Thursday visits (Sai Baba's sacred day) and festivals, everything fills up.

Tips

  • Thursdays are busiest — Sai Baba's day. Expect double the normal crowds.
  • Guru Purnima and Ram Navami are the peak festivals. Shirdi becomes incredibly crowded.
  • Photography is not allowed inside the sanctum.
  • The Prasad counter sells laddus and other offerings. The coconut prasad is complimentary after darshan.
  • Dwarkamai and Chavadi near the main temple are other important Sai Baba sites — visit all three.
  • Book return train tickets before departure. Check indianrail.app for availability.
