Rameswaram is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites, connected to mainland India by the legendary Pamban Railway Bridge — India's first sea bridge. Every train to Rameswaram crosses this bridge, making the arrival itself a memorable experience with the ocean stretching to the horizon on both sides.

Ramayana Express16733/3414:00 MDU18:00~4h₹80–₹500
Madurai is the nearest major city. The 4-hour train ride is short and scenic, especially as you approach the coast. Multiple daily trains serve this route.

From Other Cities

Trichy (Tiruchirappalli): 5-6 hours, several daily services. Bangalore: No convenient direct train. Best route: Bangalore → Madurai (overnight) → Madurai → Rameswaram (morning). Delhi: The Navyug Express and other long-distance trains take 36+ hours. Consider flying to Madurai and taking the train onward.

The Pamban Bridge Crossing

The highlight of any Rameswaram train journey is crossing the Pamban Bridge. The 2-km bridge over the Palk Strait gives you 10-15 minutes of open-ocean views. The turquoise water, fishing boats, and the sheer audacity of a railway over the sea make this crossing unforgettable.

Timing: If you're on the overnight Chennai train, the Pamban crossing happens around 7:30-8 AM — perfect daylight. Set your alarm and be at the window.

See our separate Pamban Bridge guide for the full experience details.

Ramanathaswamy Temple

The temple houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and has the longest corridor of any Hindu temple in India — 197 meters of elaborately carved pillars. The temple's 22 sacred wells (theerthams) are used for ritual bathing before darshan.

Darshan timing: 5 AM to 1 PM, 3 PM to 9 PM. The morning is best for darshan — arrive by 5 AM for minimal queues. Theertham bath: Devotees bathe in each of the 22 wells in sequence before entering the sanctum. Temple priests guide you through the wells (₹100-200 tip expected). The water temperatures and mineral content differ in each well — it's a unique experience.

Dhanushkodi — Land's End

Dhanushkodi is 18 km from Rameswaram — the last land point before the Indian Ocean and the mythological bridge to Sri Lanka (Ram Setu). The ghost town was destroyed by the 1964 cyclone (the last train to Dhanushkodi was swept away with over 100 passengers — the tragedy led to abandoning the line).

Today, you can visit by bus or shared jeep from Rameswaram (₹50-100). The abandoned buildings, the converging waters of two seas, and the remote, windswept atmosphere make it hauntingly beautiful.

Practical Tips

  • Rameswaram is an island. Once you cross the Pamban Bridge, you're on Pamban Island. The town is small and walkable.
  • Temple dress code: Conservative clothing. Men often wear dhoti for temple entry.
  • Accommodation: Temple trust dharamshalas (₹100-500), budget hotels (₹500-1,500). The TTDC hotel is the best mid-range option.
  • Food: South Indian vegetarian predominates. Fresh fish is available at beachside eateries outside the temple zone.
  • Best season: October to March. April-June is extremely hot and humid.
