What Makes Rajdhani Special
Speed: Rajdhanis get priority over all other trains on the mainline (except Shatabdi/Vande Bharat). Track is cleared for them. This means fewer delays and faster average speeds (80-110 km/h). Meals included: Dinner, early morning tea, and breakfast (on overnight services). Lunch on daytime stretches. IRCTC catering. Quality varies by route and vendor but is generally acceptable. All-AC: Only 1AC, 2AC, and 3AC coaches. No sleeper class. This keeps the coaches less crowded and quieter. LHB coaches: Most Rajdhanis use LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches — anti-telescopic design that's safer in derailments and provides a smoother ride. Bedding: Clean sheets, pillow, and blanket provided.Fare Structure
Rajdhani fares use flexi-fare (dynamic pricing) — the base fare increases as coaches fill up. The first 10% of passengers get the base fare. After that, fares increase in 10% increments, up to 50% above base.
Approximate fare ranges (base to maximum):| Class | Short routes (500-1,000 km) | Medium (1,000-1,500 km) | Long (1,500-2,500 km) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3AC | ₹1,200–₹1,800 | ₹1,500–₹2,500 | ₹1,800–₹3,200 |
| 2AC | ₹1,800–₹2,800 | ₹2,200–₹3,500 | ₹2,800–₹4,800 |
| 1AC | ₹3,000–₹4,500 | ₹3,500–₹5,500 | ₹4,000–₹7,000 |
Which Rajdhanis Are the Best?
Based on years of riding different Rajdhanis, here's my honest ranking:
Top tier (consistently good):- Mumbai Rajdhani (12951/52) — the original, well-maintained, punctual
- Howrah Rajdhani (12301/02) — the fastest to Kolkata, strong food service
- Patna Rajdhani (12309/10) — short route, reliable timing
- August Kranti Rajdhani — same route as Mumbai but from Nizamuddin, slightly less consistent
- Sealdah Rajdhani — solid but doesn't run daily
- Secunderabad Rajdhani — long route, food quality drops on the southern leg
- Trivandrum Rajdhani — 42 hours, the food degrades by day 2
- Dibrugarh Rajdhani — 38 hours through some of India's most delay-prone sections
- Bangalore Rajdhani — 34 hours, often significantly delayed
Food Quality — Honest Assessment
Rajdhani food is included in the fare. You don't choose whether you want it — it arrives whether you're hungry or not. Here's the reality:
- Dinner (8-9 PM): Usually the best meal. Paneer/chicken curry, dal, rice, roti, salad, dessert. Reasonably good on most routes.
- Early tea (5:30 AM): Tea/coffee with biscuits. Acceptable.
- Breakfast (7-8 AM): Bread-butter-jam-omelette or poha/upma. The weakest meal but adequate.
- Lunch (if applicable): Similar to dinner. Can be good or mediocre depending on the catering unit.
Booking Strategy
Rajdhanis are among the hardest tickets to book in India. Strategies:
- 120-day advance booking — essential for Mumbai, Howrah, and Patna Rajdhanis
- Flexi-fare awareness — book early for the lowest fare bracket
- Tatkal at 10 AM — extremely competitive but possible
- Foreign Tourist Quota — for international passport holders, a useful separate quota
- RAC confirmation — RAC on Rajdhanis almost always confirms due to heavy cancellations at intermediate stops
