Puri's Jagannath Temple is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites and home to the annual Rath Yatra — arguably India's most dramatic religious procession. The temple town is well-connected by rail from all major cities, making it accessible for both planned pilgrimages and spontaneous spiritual journeys.

From Kolkata (500 km)

The Kolkata-Puri route is covered in detail in our separate guide. Key trains: Howrah-Puri Shatabdi (7 hours daytime), Dhauli Express (overnight, arrive 6 AM), Puri Express (overnight, arrive 6:30 AM).

From Delhi (1,800 km)

Nandankanan Express12815/1606:45 NDLS10:05+1~27h₹500–₹3,000
The Purushottam Express is the direct Delhi-Puri premium service. At 31 hours, it's a long journey but it runs through some of India's most populated and historically significant terrain (UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha).

From Bangalore (1,600 km)

No direct convenient train exists. Best approach: Bangalore → Chennai by train (5 hours), then Chennai → Puri (20-22 hours via Coromandel Express or East Coast Express). Alternatively, fly to Bhubaneswar and take a local train to Puri (1.5 hours).

From Mumbai (1,900 km)

The Konark Express (11019/20) from CSMT is the direct option at about 32 hours. The LTT-Puri Express is another. Long journeys but feasible for dedicated pilgrims.

Puri Station to Temple

Puri station is 2 km from the Jagannath Temple. Auto-rickshaws charge ₹30-50. You can walk if you have light luggage — follow the Grand Road (Bada Danda) straight to the temple.

Temple access: Only Hindus are permitted inside the Jagannath Temple. This rule is strictly enforced. Non-Hindu visitors can view the temple from the rooftop of the Raghunandan Library opposite the main gate.

Rath Yatra Travel

The Rath Yatra (June/July — date varies by Hindu calendar) transforms Puri:

  • Population swells from 200,000 to over 1 million

  • Special trains run from Howrah, CSMT, and other cities

  • Regular trains add extra coaches

  • Despite all additions, demand wildly exceeds supply

Strategy: Book 4 months ahead. Consider arriving 2-3 days before Rath Yatra. Hotels quintuple in price — book the Sai international or government dharamshalas early. The Rath Yatra procession on Grand Road is a once-in-a-lifetime experience but physically demanding (massive crowds, heat, standing for hours).

Temple Darshan Tips

  • Morning darshan (6-9 AM): Shortest queues. The temple opens at 5 AM for mangala aarti.
  • Afternoon (12-3 PM): Longest queues due to tour group arrivals.
  • Evening aarti (7 PM): Beautiful but crowded.
  • Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazaar: The temple kitchen is the largest in the world, feeding 10,000-100,000 people daily. The prasad is served on sal leaf plates. The khichdi and dalma are famous.

Konark and Bhubaneswar Circuit

Most Puri visitors combine with:

  • Konark Sun Temple: 35 km from Puri. UNESCO site. No rail — bus/taxi only.

  • Bhubaneswar temples: 60 km. Direct trains run frequently (1-1.5 hours). The Lingaraj Temple complex is comparable in scale to Jagannath.

The classic circuit: Delhi/Kolkata → Bhubaneswar (temples) → Puri (Jagannath + beach) → Konark (day trip) → return from Puri.

Best Season

October to March is ideal. Puri's coastal location keeps temperatures moderate year-round, but summer (April-June) is hot and humid. Monsoon brings cyclone risk and rough seas.

Book trains on indianrail.app — the Puri routes are busy year-round due to constant pilgrim traffic.
