Pune to Goa by train takes 9-12 hours — longer than the bus (8-9 hours) but through far more spectacular terrain. The route cuts through the Sahyadri mountain range (Western Ghats) and joins the Konkan Railway for the final stretch to Madgaon. If you time it right, you pass Dudhsagar Falls and dozens of tunnels in daylight.

The Route — Two Halves

The Pune-Goa train journey has two distinct halves:

First half — Deccan Plateau to the Ghats: Pune → Satara → Miraj → Belgaum. This stretch crosses the flat-to-rolling Deccan Plateau of Maharashtra and enters Karnataka. The landscape is agricultural — sugarcane, grapes (Nashik region trains), and red laterite soil. Second half — Through the Ghats to the Coast: From Belgaum (or Londa Junction), the train enters the Western Ghats and descends to the Konkan coast. This is where the magic happens — the track winds through dense tropical forest, crosses ravines on tall bridges, and plunges through tunnel after tunnel. If it's monsoon season, every surface is dripping green and waterfalls appear out of nowhere.

Dudhsagar Falls Section

The Castle Rock-Kulem section includes the famous Dudhsagar waterfall. The train passes directly beside this 310-meter cascade. During monsoon (July-October), it's absolutely spectacular — a massive curtain of white water crashing into the valley.

On most Pune-Goa trains, this section passes in the dark (early morning hours). To see it in daylight, you'd need to plan your journey through Londa Junction-Castle Rock-Kulem during daytime hours, which may mean taking a morning train from Pune or breaking the journey at Belgaum.

Overnight Experience

The Goa Express (12779/80) is the most popular service. Departing Pune at 7:35 PM, it reaches Madgaon by 7 AM. The timing is ideal for overnight travel — sleep through the night, wake up in Goa.

The Pune-Vasco Express (17019/20) departs earlier at 4:30 PM and arrives around 4:30 AM — a 3 AM arrival at Madgaon isn't great. You'll be sitting on the platform waiting for dawn.

For the Goa Express, book 3AC (about ₹800-1,000) for a comfortable overnight. SL (₹300) works if you don't mind the basic setup.

Bus Competition

The Pune-Goa bus route via NH48 and NH748 takes about 8-9 hours and costs ₹600-1,500 for a Volvo sleeper. Buses are faster and more frequent — they run every 30-60 minutes from Pune Swargate.

The bus wins on speed and frequency. The train wins on scenery, comfort (flat bed vs bus berth), and price (SL at ₹250). If you want to sleep properly, the train's flat berths are infinitely more comfortable than a bus sleeper.

My recommendation: take the bus if time is short, take the train if you want to enjoy the journey. During monsoon, definitely take the train — the Ghat roads can be treacherous with landslides.

Pune Station

Trains depart from Pune Junction (PUNE), which is in the Shivajinagar area, well-connected by city buses and autos. Some trains start from Pune Junction, others pass through (originating from Mumbai or other cities). If your train originates at Pune, you'll get a clean coach. Pass-through trains may already be partially occupied.

Madgaon Arrival Tips

A 7 AM arrival at Madgaon is perfect. You can grab breakfast at the station (the small canteen has decent poha and tea), then take an auto or taxi to your beach of choice.

Pre-arranged pickup is recommended for South Goa beaches (Palolem, Agonda) as they're 30-40 km from Madgaon. For North Goa (Calangute, Baga), the Kadamba bus to Panaji is the cheapest option (₹60), then a local bus from Panaji to the beach.

Booking Pressure

Pune-Goa trains face extreme booking pressure during:

  • Long weekends: Any Friday-Saturday-Sunday-Monday holiday combination

  • Christmas/New Year: December 20 to January 5 is a warzone for bookings

  • Goa Carnival (February): Popular with Punekars

  • Monsoon weekends: Surprisingly popular for the Dudhsagar waterfall chasers

Book at 120 days for any of these periods. For regular weekday travel, 2-3 weeks advance is usually sufficient.

Break Journey Option

If direct trains are sold out, split the trip: Pune → Belgaum (5-6 hours by train, many options) → overnight in Belgaum → Belgaum to Goa (4-5 hours). Belgaum has decent hotels and great North Karnataka food (jolada rotti and ennegai is the local favorite).

Alternatively: Pune → Kolhapur (3 hours) → Kolhapur to Goa (8 hours by bus via Amboli Ghat). Kolhapur is worth a stop for Mahalakshmi Temple and the legendary misal pav.

Monsoon Travel Warning

The Western Ghat section between Belgaum/Londa and Kulem is prone to landslides during heavy monsoon. Indian Railways sometimes imposes speed restrictions or temporary track closures. Trains can be delayed by 2-6 hours during active landslide periods.

If traveling July-August, keep buffer time in your Goa plans. Check train running status on indianrail.app before heading to the station.
