Vande Bharat — The New Flagship
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat has quickly become the premium choice on this route. At just over 6 hours with modern semi-high speed coaches, it competes directly with the Shatabdi on time while offering significantly better onboard comfort.
The train departs Mumbai Central at 6:10 AM, reaching Ahmedabad by 12:15 PM. That's lunch time — perfect for a same-day business meeting in the afternoon. The return service departs Ahmedabad in the afternoon.
Meals are included and a cut above Shatabdi quality. The seats have charging points, reading lights, and the ride quality is noticeably smoother than older coach designs. CC fare starts around ₹900, EC around ₹1,800.
Shatabdi — The Proven Choice
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi (12009/10) has been the route's standard for decades. It follows almost the same timing as the Vande Bharat but costs about ₹100-200 less. Meals are included (breakfast and tea service).
For regular travelers on this route, the Shatabdi vs Vande Bharat choice comes down to whether the newer coaches are worth the small fare premium. Both are excellent.
Karnavati Express — Value Pick
Named after Ahmedabad's historical name, the Karnavati Express (12933/34) is a morning departure with SL, 3AC, and CC classes. It's about 30 minutes slower than the Shatabdi but offers sleeper class (around ₹200) — the cheapest reserved option on this route.
The CC fare on the Karnavati is significantly cheaper than the Shatabdi CC. If you don't need meals included and want to save money, this is the smart choice.
Overnight Options
Two strong overnight trains serve this route:
Gujarat Mail (12901/02): The classic. Departs Mumbai Central at 10:05 PM, arrives Ahmedabad 6:05 AM. It's been running since British times and has a certain old-world reliability. Sleeper through 1AC classes available. Book a 2AC berth and you wake up in Ahmedabad refreshed. Ahmedabad Duronto (12267/68): Departs later at 11:20 PM with fewer stops. It's an AC-only service (3AC and above). Slightly faster, slightly pricier. Good for those who want fewer interruptions during the night. For overnight travel, I prefer the Gujarat Mail — it's cheaper, has more class options, and the 10 PM departure gives you time to have dinner in Mumbai before boarding.
The Route
The Western Railway mainline from Mumbai to Ahmedabad passes through:
Mumbai Central → Borivali → Vasai Road → Vapi → Surat → Vadodara → Anand → AhmedabadThis is one of the most industrialized rail corridors in India. You pass through the Gujarat industrial belt — Vapi (chemicals), Surat (diamonds and textiles), Vadodara (petrochemicals), Anand (dairy — Amul headquarters). Not the most scenic route, but you can literally see India's manufacturing backbone from your window.
Surat and Vadodara are major stops where many passengers board/alight. If you're going to either of these cities specifically, this same route serves you.
Surat — The Midway Hub
Surat (ST) is roughly halfway, about 3 hours from both Mumbai and Ahmedabad. It's India's diamond capital and a booming city. Many travelers use Surat as their actual destination rather than going all the way to Ahmedabad.
All trains stop at Surat. The station has been upgraded significantly and has decent waiting rooms and food options.
Station Information
Mumbai Central (BCT): The Western Railway terminus. Not to be confused with CSMT (which is Central Railway). Mumbai Central is served by the Western Line local trains. The station is near the Haji Ali area of South Mumbai. Ahmedabad Junction (ADI): The main station in Ahmedabad. Located in Kalupur area. It's been expanded and modernized. Auto-rickshaws are the primary local transport — Ahmedabad autos actually run on meters (a rarity in India). Metro connectivity is developing. Sabarmati Junction (SBIB): Some trains stop here, which is closer to the northern parts of Ahmedabad and the Sabarmati Ashram area.Bullet Train — The Future
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is where India's first bullet train (Shinkansen-style, with Japanese collaboration) is being built. When operational, it'll cut the journey to about 2 hours.
Until then, the current 6-hour Vande Bharat remains the fastest option. Track the bullet train progress on news portals, and check indianrail.app for conventional train schedules.
Practical Tips
- Gujarati food alert: The Shatabdi/Vande Bharat breakfast includes Gujarati options like thepla or dhokla, which is a nice local touch.
- Surat platform food: If your train stops at Surat for 5+ minutes, the platform locho (a Surati snack) is worth trying.
- Vadodara stop: Platform stalls sell excellent sev-usal here.
- Winter travel (Nov-Feb): Perfect weather for this route. AC coaches can over-cool at night on overnight trains.
- Summer (Apr-Jun): Gujarat heat is intense. Non-AC sleeper class on overnight trains becomes uncomfortable. Budget for AC if traveling in summer.
- Book early for Navratri: Nine nights of Garba mean Gujarat-bound trains from Mumbai are packed. Book 3-4 months ahead during September-October.
Driving Alternative
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Expressway takes about 6-7 hours with tolls adding up to ₹400-500. The Shatabdi takes the same time but at a fraction of the driving cost. Unless you need a car in Ahmedabad, the train is the practical choice.
