Kolkata to Siliguri (New Jalpaiguri/NJP) is about 560 km — the gateway to Darjeeling, Sikkim, Dooars, and the entire northeastern hill region. The journey takes 7-10 hours, and the train is the primary transport for millions of North Bengal travelers. NJP station is where you connect to the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train or catch a shared jeep to the hills.

Darjeeling Mail — The Iconic Service

The Darjeeling Mail (12343/44) has been the lifeline between Kolkata and North Bengal since the British era. It departs Sealdah at 10:05 PM and reaches NJP by 8:10 AM — the timing is perfect for the Darjeeling connection.

From NJP, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train departs at 8:30 AM (check current schedule). If the Darjeeling Mail is on time, you can walk across to the DHR platform and catch the toy train up to Darjeeling. That's the dream connection — it doesn't always work due to delays, but when it does, it's magical.

The Darjeeling Mail has SL through 1AC. Sleeper class starts around ₹300. It's a well-run train with a loyal ridership. The 10-hour journey gives you a full night's sleep.

Vande Bharat — Day Travel

The Howrah-NJP Vande Bharat cuts the journey to about 7.5 hours. Departing Howrah at 6 AM, you reach NJP by 1:30 PM. This is perfect if you want to travel during the day and arrive in time to catch an afternoon shared jeep to Darjeeling (3-4 hours by road).

The day journey also lets you see the North Bengal landscape — the flat delta of South Bengal gradually giving way to the tea gardens and riverine landscape of the Dooars as you approach Siliguri. On a clear day, you'll see the Kanchenjunga range from the train as you near NJP.

Sealdah vs Howrah

A crucial Kolkata detail: most NJP-bound trains depart from Sealdah (SDAH), not Howrah. This includes the Darjeeling Mail, Kanchankanya, and Padatik Express. The Shatabdi and Vande Bharat depart from Howrah (HWH).

If you're in South Kolkata, reaching Sealdah is easier (Metro connects directly). If you're in West Kolkata or Howrah side, the Shatabdi/Vande Bharat from Howrah saves you the river crossing.

NJP Station — The Gateway

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is technically in Siliguri. It's a major junction and can be quite chaotic, especially in the morning when multiple trains arrive simultaneously and hordes of tourists spill out looking for Darjeeling connections.

From NJP to Darjeeling (88 km):
  • Toy Train (DHR): 7-8 hours, ₹1,500-2,000 for first class. Scenic but extremely slow. Worth doing once for the experience. See our separate Darjeeling Himalayan Railway guide.
  • Shared Jeep/Sumo: 3-4 hours, ₹200-300 per person. From the NJP taxi stand. The most common option. The road climbs through tea gardens via Kurseong.
  • Private Taxi: ₹2,500-3,500 to Darjeeling. Book through the prepaid counter at NJP or arrange in advance.
From NJP to Gangtok (Sikkim, 125 km):
  • Shared jeep: 4-5 hours, ₹300-400. Depart from Siliguri's SNT stand (a short auto ride from NJP).
  • Private taxi: ₹3,500-5,000.
From NJP to Dooars (Lataguri/Gorumara):
  • Shared vehicles or state buses, 2-3 hours.

The Route

Kolkata → Burdwan → Bolpur → Malda → Kishanganj → NJP

The route passes through Bengal's diverse landscape:

  • South Bengal (Sealdah to Burdwan): Suburban sprawl, then rice paddies of Burdwan district.

  • Bolpur (Shantiniketan): Many trains stop here. Rabindranath Tagore's university town.

  • Malda Town: Mango capital of India. If traveling in May-June, the platform might smell of mangoes.

  • North Bengal (Kishanganj to NJP): The landscape opens up. Tea gardens start appearing. If it's a clear morning, the Himalayan foothills loom ahead.

Booking Pressure

This route gets brutally contested during:

  • Durga Puja (October): Bengalis head home or to the hills. Book 4 months ahead.

  • Diwali/Chhath: North Bihar passengers also use this route, adding to demand.

  • May-June: Summer holidays. Everyone heads to Darjeeling.

  • Christmas/New Year: The NJP gateway to Darjeeling, Sikkim draws a big crowd.

The Darjeeling Mail is the hardest to book because of its perfect overnight timing. If it's waitlisted, try the Kanchankanya or Padatik — both reach NJP by morning.

Food on the Journey

The Malda Town station stop (around midnight/1 AM on overnight trains) has platform food, but you'll probably be sleeping. Better to eat dinner in Kolkata before boarding.

For the Vande Bharat/Shatabdi daytime services, meals are included. On overnight trains, carry provisions — the Sealdah station has decent food stalls for pre-boarding purchases.

NJP station's small canteen serves tea and basic meals. The Siliguri town area (3 km from NJP) has much better options — Bengali, Nepali, and Tibetan food in the market areas.

Weather Note

North Bengal weather can shift dramatically from what you left in Kolkata. NJP/Siliguri is humid and warm (similar to Kolkata), but Darjeeling at 2,000m elevation is 10-15°C cooler. Pack layers — you'll go from sweating at NJP to needing a jacket in Darjeeling within a 3-hour drive.
