Kolkata to Puri by Train — Jagannath Temple Route Guide
Guide to trains from Kolkata to Puri for Jagannath Temple pilgrimage. Shatabdi, Puri Express, Dhauli Express compared with fares, timings, and temple tips.
Kolkata to Puri is about 500 km — a 7-10 hour train journey that's one of the most popular pilgrimage routes in Eastern India. The Jagannath Temple draws millions of devotees annually, and the train is how most of them get there. The route passes through Odisha's heartland, crossing the Mahanadi delta and some genuinely lush countryside.

Shatabdi — Day Trip Possibility
The Howrah-Puri Shatabdi (12821/22) makes a same-day round trip technically possible. Depart Howrah at 6:15 AM, reach Puri at 1:05 PM. Visit the temple, have lunch on the beach, and take the return Shatabdi departing Puri at 2:30 PM to reach Howrah by 9:30 PM.
It's tiring but doable for a darshan-focused trip. The Shatabdi is CC and EC only, with meals included. The fare is reasonable at ₹600-1,300. The train is well-maintained and usually punctual.
If you're doing a day trip, reach the temple straight from the station (2 km, ₹30-50 by auto). Skip the beach until you've completed your darshan — the temple queue takes time.
Overnight for Morning Arrival
Most pilgrims prefer arriving in Puri at dawn — the morning temple experience is different from the afternoon crowd. Three strong overnight options:
Puri Express (12837/38): Departs Santragachi (near Howrah) at 10 PM, arrives Puri 6:30 AM. Perfect timing for morning darshan. The departure from Santragachi rather than Howrah is a minor inconvenience — Santragachi is about 5 km south of Howrah, reachable by local train. Dhauli Express (12895/96): Departs Howrah at 8:30 PM, arrives Puri 6:20 AM. Slightly earlier departure gives you a more relaxed boarding experience at Howrah. Howrah-Puri Superfast (12261/62): Late departure at 11:45 PM, arrival 7:35 AM. Good if you can't leave work early. The fastest overnight option at under 8 hours. The Route
Howrah → Kharagpur → Balasore → Bhadrak → Cuttack → Bhubaneswar → Puri
The first stretch through West Bengal is flat rice paddy country. After crossing into Odisha at Balasore, the landscape stays green and agricultural. The Cuttack-Bhubaneswar section runs through Odisha's twin cities. From Bhubaneswar to Puri (60 km), the terrain becomes more coastal with coconut palms and brackish lagoons (Chilika Lake is nearby).
Bhubaneswar Connection
Almost all Kolkata-Puri trains stop at Bhubaneswar (BBS), which is just 60 km before Puri. If you're combining a Puri pilgrimage with Bhubaneswar temple visits (Lingaraj, Mukteshwar, Rajarani), you can break the journey here.
Bhubaneswar to Puri has frequent local trains (1-1.5 hours, ₹30 in general). You could spend a day in Bhubaneswar, then hop on a local to Puri.
Puri Station and Temple Access
Puri station is small and straightforward. The Jagannath Temple is about 2 km from the station. You can walk it (follow the main road, you'll see the temple tower from the station), or take an auto (₹30-50).
Temple logistics:- Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the Jagannath Temple. A signboard at the entrance states this clearly.
- No phones, cameras, or electronic devices inside. Leave them at your hotel or use the lockers outside the temple.
- Morning darshan (6-8 AM) has the shortest queues. Afternoon (12-3 PM) is longest.
- The famous Mahaprasad (temple food) is available at Ananda Bazaar near the temple. It's served on sal leaf plates and feeds thousands daily. The khichdi is legendary.
Rath Yatra Period
During Rath Yatra (June/July), Puri's population swells from 200,000 to over a million. Trains are packed beyond comprehension. Special trains run from Howrah and other cities, but even these fill up instantly.
If you're planning a Rath Yatra visit:
- Book 4 months in advance
- Consider arriving 2-3 days before the main event
- Hotel prices triple — book accommodation simultaneously with your train
- The station and town become extremely crowded. Carry minimal luggage.
Konark Connection
Konark Sun Temple (UNESCO World Heritage) is 35 km from Puri. There's no railway station at Konark — you need to take a bus or taxi from Puri. OTDC (Odisha Tourism) runs day trips from Puri covering Konark and nearby attractions.
Many travelers do a Bhubaneswar-Puri-Konark circuit. The logical sequence: arrive Bhubaneswar by train, see temples, take a local train to Puri, visit Jagannath Temple and beach, day trip to Konark, depart from Puri by overnight train back to Kolkata.
Food
Odisha cuisine is underrated. In Puri:
- Dalma (lentil and vegetable dish) is the staple
- Chenna Poda (baked cottage cheese dessert) is a must-try
- The beachside shacks serve fresh seafood — prawn curry with rice is the classic Puri beach meal
- Wildgrass Restaurant near the beach has excellent Odia thalis
On the train, the Bhubaneswar station stop has decent platform food. The Cuttack station has good imarti (a sweet similar to jalebi).
Beach Time
Puri beach is right at the edge of town, about 3 km from the station. It's a wide, sandy beach with lifeguards. The sea can be rough — follow the flags and lifeguard instructions. The sunrise over the Bay of Bengal is spectacular from Puri beach, especially if you've just arrived on an overnight train.
Season
October to March is best — pleasant weather, major festivals (Rath Yatra is in summer though). April-June is hot and humid. Monsoon (July-September) brings heavy rain and the sea is too rough for swimming, but the temple and city have their own rainy-season charm.
