The Kolkata to Delhi direction deserves its own guide because the train timings, station logistics, and booking dynamics are quite different from Delhi-Kolkata. You're departing from Howrah or Sealdah — two of India's busiest and most chaotic stations — and the evening departure window is different.

Howrah is one of the oldest and busiest stations in India. It can be genuinely overwhelming, especially for first-time visitors. The station has 23 platforms and handles over 600 trains daily (including suburban services).

Getting there: Cross the Hooghly River via Howrah Bridge from Kolkata. During rush hours (4-7 PM, when Rajdhanis depart), the bridge and approach roads are jammed. Leave for Howrah at least 90 minutes before departure if you're coming from central or south Kolkata. Inside the station: The main concourse has electronic display boards. Find your platform number and coach position. Rajdhanis typically depart from platforms 9-14 (the upper-numbered platforms toward the south end). There's a Rajdhani-specific waiting room with AC — use it. Pre-paid taxi: The booth is on the ground floor near gate 1. Prices are fixed. Much safer than negotiating with random drivers outside.

Which Rajdhani?

The 12302 (via Gaya) is the faster Rajdhani, departing at 5:05 PM from Howrah. It skips Patna, going through Gaya and Mughal Sarai instead. Arrives New Delhi by 10 AM.

The 12306 (via Patna) departs earlier at 2:45 PM. The earlier departure means you're at the station during lunch hour — less chaotic than the evening rush. It arrives Delhi by 8:25 AM, slightly earlier.

My recommendation: if you're flexible, take 12306 for the calmer Howrah departure and the slightly earlier Delhi arrival. If speed matters most, 12302 is about 40 minutes faster.

Sealdah Rajdhani — North Kolkata's Option

If you're in Salt Lake, Dum Dum, Lake Town, or anywhere in north/east Kolkata, the Sealdah Rajdhani (12314) saves you the Howrah Bridge crossing. Sealdah station is on the Kolkata side of the river and is served by Metro.

The train is slightly slower and doesn't run daily. But the convenience factor for north Kolkata residents is significant — reaching Howrah during evening rush can take longer than the first hour of the train journey.

Duronto — Night Owl's Pick

The Howrah Duronto (12274) departs at 8:15 PM. This late departure means you can have dinner in Kolkata, board the train, sleep, and wake up with most of the journey done. You arrive Delhi by 2 PM the next afternoon.

The afternoon arrival in Delhi gives you time to freshen up and even attend an evening engagement. The non-stop nature means fewer disturbances during the night.

Budget: Poorva Express

The Poorva Express (12382) from Howrah departs at 8:15 AM and takes a full 24 hours. It has classes from SL through 1AC, with sleeper class starting around ₹500.

Twenty-four hours is long, but this train has a loyal following. It stops at every major station on the route — useful if you're headed to Mughal Sarai, Allahabad, or Kanpur rather than Delhi itself.

Pack enough food for the full day. The pantry car situation on the Poorva can be hit-or-miss.

Yuva Express — For Young Travelers

The Howrah Yuva Express was introduced specifically for young travelers (students, job seekers). The fares are subsidized — 60% of seats are reserved under the Yuva quota for passengers under 45 years. This makes it one of the cheapest AC options on this route.

It runs 3-4 times a week. Check the running days for your date. The coaches are 3AC only. The overnight timing (depart 9:25 PM, arrive 2:45 PM next day) means you sleep through most of it.

Food and Supplies

The Rajdhani meal service covers dinner (around 8 PM), early morning tea (5:30 AM), and breakfast (7-8 AM). Quality varies but it's adequate.

For non-Rajdhani trains, stock up before departure:

  • Howrah station has decent food stalls on the main concourse. The Bengali sweets counter is worth a stop — grab some sandesh or rosogolla for the journey.
  • DDU Junction (Mughal Sarai) is the big food stop at midnight. The platform has samosa, chai, and biryani vendors. Not gourmet, but it's the middle of the night and anything hot is welcome.
  • Allahabad (Prayagraj) station around 3-4 AM isn't great for food. Sleep through it.

Fog Season Warning

December 20 to January 31 is fog season in the Gangetic plains. The Kolkata-Delhi route passes through the worst fog belt in India — Bihar and UP. Trains can run 6-15 hours late during severe fog events.

If you must travel during this period:

  • Book flexible tickets or keep a buffer day

  • Check running status on indianrail.app on the day of travel

  • The Rajdhanis tend to get priority in fog conditions but they're still delayed

  • Consider flying instead — Kolkata-Delhi flights are cheaper than you'd think (₹3,000-5,000)

Kolkata Departure Tips

  • Eat before boarding. Kolkata has incredible food — enjoy a proper meal at the city before subjecting yourself to train catering.
  • Charge everything. Power banks, phones, laptops. Charging points on trains are contested, especially in 3AC.
  • Carry a thin shawl/blanket. Rajdhani AC is set to polar temperatures. The provided blankets are thin.
  • Book a lower berth if you like watching the landscape. This route crosses the Gangetic plain — flat but atmospheric, especially at dawn over the Bihar countryside.
