Getting to Darjeeling by train is a two-part affair. No direct train runs from Kolkata Howrah to Darjeeling town. You take a full-gauge train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), and then either switch to the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train or grab a shared jeep up the hill. Both options have their charm, but they're wildly different experiences.

Part 1: Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri (NJP)

The distance is about 560 km, and trains take anywhere from 7 to 12 hours depending on the service. NJP is your gateway station — it sits right next to Siliguri in the foothills.

Which Train to Pick?

The Shatabdi and Vande Bharat are the fastest daytime options. The Vande Bharat shaves about 30 minutes off and the seats are more comfortable. Both get you to NJP by early afternoon, giving you time to reach Darjeeling the same evening.

The Darjeeling Mail is the classic overnight choice. You board after dinner, sleep through the journey, and wake up at NJP ready for the hill climb. It's been running this route since British times, though the coaches have obviously been updated since then.

If you're on a budget, the Kanchankanya or Teesta Torsa in sleeper class will cost you under ₹350.

Part 2: NJP to Darjeeling — Toy Train vs Road

This is where the journey gets interesting.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train)

The UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge railway runs from NJP to Darjeeling, covering 88 km in about 7-8 hours. Yes, it's slow. Painfully slow. But that's the whole point.

Current services:
  • NJP to Darjeeling full run: Departs NJP around 09:00, reaches Darjeeling by 16:30. Runs select days — check availability on IRCTC.
  • Joyride from Darjeeling: A shorter 2-hour round trip from Darjeeling to Ghum and back. This is what most tourists do.
Fares: ₹1,000–₹1,500 for the full run (first class), ₹200–₹300 for joyride.

The full-length toy train ride passes through Kurseong, the famous Batasia Loop (where the track spirals around itself), and Ghum — the highest railway station in eastern India at 7,407 feet. The views of Kanchenjunga on a clear day are genuinely stunning.

Practical reality: The full toy train run is unreliable. Services get cancelled without much notice, especially during monsoons. Landslides on the route are common in July-August. Don't build your entire trip around getting a seat — have a backup plan.

Shared Jeep / Taxi

Most people actually take a shared jeep from Siliguri/NJP to Darjeeling. It takes about 3-3.5 hours, costs ₹200-300 per person (shared), and runs throughout the day. Private taxis charge ₹2,500-3,500.

The road goes through Kurseong and the views are gorgeous, especially from Ghum onwards. You'll hit hairpin bends, tea gardens on both sides, and if it's cloudy, you'll drive through actual clouds.

My recommendation: Take a jeep up to Darjeeling (to save time), and do the short toy train joyride from Darjeeling to Ghum and back. You get the best of both worlds.

Booking Tips

  1. Book the Kolkata-NJP train early — these trains fill up fast, especially the Shatabdi and Darjeeling Mail during tourist season (October-December, March-May)
  2. Toy train tickets can be booked on IRCTC, but availability is limited. Book at least 15-20 days in advance during peak season
  3. Return journey: If you're coming back, Darjeeling Mail from NJP departs around 19:40 and reaches Kolkata by morning — perfect timing

Best Time to Travel

  • October to December: Clear skies, best mountain views, comfortable temperatures. Peak tourist season though, so book early.
  • March to May: Pleasant weather, rhododendrons blooming. Gets crowded during school holidays.
  • June to September: Monsoons. Heavy rain, frequent landslides, toy train often suspended. I'd avoid this window unless you specifically enjoy dramatic weather.
  • January to February: Cold — temperatures drop to 2-5°C in Darjeeling. Fewer tourists, but you'll need serious warm clothing.

What to Pack

The temperature difference between Kolkata and Darjeeling can be 20-25°C. Even in summer, Darjeeling evenings need a jacket. Pack layers — you'll go from sweating at Howrah to shivering at Ghum.

Carry motion sickness tablets if you're prone to it. The road from NJP to Darjeeling has around 100 curves, and the toy train's constant swaying gets to some people.

Budget Breakdown (Per Person)

ItemBudgetMid-Range
Kolkata to NJP (Sleeper/3AC)₹350₹900
NJP to Darjeeling (Shared jeep/Toy train)₹250₹1,200
Total one-way₹600₹2,100
The entire Kolkata to Darjeeling journey is one of those trips where the getting there is half the experience. Whether you're watching the Teesta River from the Darjeeling Mail window at dawn or hanging out the side of a toy train coach as it spirals around Batasia Loop, the journey stays with you long after you're back in Kolkata.
