Grand Trunk Express — Chennai to Delhi Historic Route
Guide to the Grand Trunk Express, one of India's oldest trains running Chennai to Delhi since 1929. Route history, current service, fares, and what to expect.
The Grand Trunk Express (Train 12615/16) is one of Indian Railways' most historic trains, running between Chennai Central and New Delhi since 1929. Named after the legendary Grand Trunk Road that connected Kolkata to Peshawar, this train follows its own grand trunk route up the spine of peninsular India — from the Coromandel Coast through the Deccan Plateau, across the Vindhya Range, through the Gangetic Plain, and into Delhi.

A Journey Through India's Core
The Grand Trunk Express (or "GT Express" as regulars call it) is not the fastest train between Chennai and Delhi — the Rajdhani does it in 28 hours, and flights take 2.5 hours. But the GT Express has something no other service can match: a continuous, unhurried traverse through the geological and cultural heart of India.
Tamil Nadu section: The train departs Chennai and climbs through the Eastern Ghats via Arakkonam and Renigunta (junction for Tirupati). The landscape is dry granite hills and scrubland. Andhra-Karnataka section: Through the Rayalaseema region — one of India's driest areas. Guntakal is a major junction in this arid landscape. The red soil and granite outcrops of the Deccan dominate. Maharashtra section: The train enters Maharashtra at Solapur and passes through the sugar belt — flat agricultural land studded with sugar mills. Manmad Junction (the station for Shirdi pilgrims) and Bhusaval Junction mark the Vidarbha region. Madhya Pradesh-UP section: After crossing the Narmada River, the train enters the Bundelkhand region. Jhansi — the city of Rani Laxmibai — appears after about 27 hours. The Chambal ravines are visible from the train. Final approach: After Agra Cantt (Taj Mahal city), the flat Indo-Gangetic plain stretches northward. The train passes through Mathura (Krishna's birthplace) before the final run into New Delhi.History
The GT Express was introduced in 1929 as the "Grand Trunk Mail" by the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway. It was one of the first pan-Indian rail services, connecting South India to the northern capital.
The name references the Grand Trunk Road — the ancient highway running from Bengal to Afghanistan, rebuilt by the Mughals and later the British. Though the train doesn't follow the GTR itself (it runs more centrally), the name captures the same idea: a great trunk route connecting distant corners of India.
Over 95+ years of operation, the GT Express has survived wars, independence, gauge conversion, and countless timetable changes. It remains a daily service and a functional, important train for thousands of passengers.

Who Rides the GT Express?
The GT Express passenger mix reflects India itself:
- Government employees transferring between southern and northern postings
- Students heading to/from Tamil Nadu's engineering colleges
- Pilgrims alighting at Renigunta (Tirupati), Manmad (Shirdi), Agra (Taj Mahal)
- Migrant workers from Andhra/Tamil Nadu working in Delhi
- The occasional railway enthusiast doing the full run for the experience
Practical Tips for the 33-Hour Journey
- Food at Guntakal station is decent — South Indian breakfast if you're passing in the morning.
- Bhusaval is a major food stop. The platform has established food stalls with proper meals.
- Jhansi has excellent platform poha and samosas.
- Agra Cantt platform petha vendors are worth a purchase.
- Carry enough food for at least 4 meals (dinner, breakfast, lunch, dinner or relevant combinations).
- Book a lower berth in SL for the best views. The GT Express passes through some photogenic terrain in daylight.
- Charging: Power points are available but contested. Carry a power bank.
