The Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur — is India's most popular tourist circuit. These three cities form a rough triangle of about 200-300 km per side, each connected by excellent train services. Doing the circuit entirely by train is not only possible but often better than hiring a car — it's cheaper, more comfortable, and you avoid India's notorious highway traffic.

Total circuit by train: 736 km. Total rail time: about 8 hours spread across 3 legs. The rest of your time is spent exploring three of India's greatest cities.

Leg 1: Delhi to Agra — The Gatimaan Express

The Gatimaan Express (12049/50) is the star of this leg — India's first semi-high-speed train, covering Delhi-Agra in just 1 hour 40 minutes at up to 160 km/h. Departs Hazrat Nizamuddin at 8:10 AM, arrives Agra Cantt at 9:50 AM.

Alternative: If the Gatimaan is sold out, the Bhopal Shatabdi (12001/02) departs New Delhi at 6:00 AM and reaches Agra Cantt by 8:05 AM — even earlier arrival. Budget: The Taj Express (12279/80) costs just ₹100 in 2S class. Takes 3 hours but saves money.

See our detailed Delhi-Agra guide for more options.

Leg 2: Agra to Jaipur — The Tricky One

This is the weakest rail connection in the triangle. There's no Shatabdi or Vande Bharat on this route. The options:

TrainNumberDeparts AGFArrives JPDuration
Agra-Jaipur SF12963/6417:3021:35~4h
Marudhar Express14853/54VariousJP~4-5h
The 4-hour train ride passes through the Aravalli hills — pleasant scenery as you transition from UP's flatlands to Rajasthan's rocky terrain. Alternative: If train timings don't work, buses run Agra-Jaipur in about 5 hours (₹400-800). Some tourists hire a car for this leg and visit Fatehpur Sikri en route.

Leg 3: Jaipur to Delhi — The Fast Finish

The Ajmer Vande Bharat (22985/86) from Jaipur to Delhi takes just 2 hours 30 minutes — the fastest option. The Ajmer Shatabdi (12015/16) is the reliable alternative at about 4.5 hours.

See our detailed Jaipur-Delhi guide for all options.

Train travel for the entire Golden Triangle circuit can cost as little as ₹450 — less than a single cab ride from Delhi airport.

Tips for the Circuit

  • Book all three train legs simultaneously when planning. The Gatimaan fills up fast.
  • Agra needs only 1 full day. The main attractions (Taj, Fort, Baby Taj) are compact.
  • Jaipur needs 1.5-2 days. Amber Fort alone takes half a day. The city has more to see than most people expect.
  • Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Plan your Delhi-Agra leg accordingly.
  • October to March is the ideal season. Summer heat (April-June) makes outdoor sightseeing in Agra and Jaipur genuinely difficult.
  • Hire local guides at each monument. ASI-approved guides are available at the entrance (₹500-1,000) and significantly enhance the experience.
