The Duronto Express was introduced in 2009 as a non-stop (or minimal stop) long-distance service between major city pairs. The name "Duronto" means "non-stop" in Bengali. Unlike Rajdhanis (which all connect to Delhi), Durontos link cities that may not have a Delhi connection as their primary corridor. They offer speed, comfort, and the unusual experience of covering 1,000+ km with almost no intermediate halts.

The key practical difference: Durontos serve city pairs that Rajdhanis don't. Mumbai-Kolkata Duronto, Mumbai-Ahmedabad Duronto, Chennai-Kolkata Duronto — these corridors needed a premium non-stop service that wasn't Delhi-centric.

The Non-Stop Experience

Riding a Duronto is different from a regular train. With zero or minimal stops, the train maintains a consistent speed for hours. You board, settle in, and the next time the train halts could be 8-12 hours later at the destination.

There's something surreal about being on a train that doesn't stop. The stations you'd normally see — with their platform vendors, their chai-wallahs, their crowds — simply flash past. The journey becomes purely about the landscape and the rhythm of the rails.

The downside: no platform food at intermediate stops. You're dependent on the pantry car or food you've packed. On longer Durontos (Mumbai-Howrah at 26 hours), this can get tiresome.

Notable Durontos

Mumbai-Howrah Duronto (12261/62): One of the busiest non-Rajdhani premium routes. Connects India's financial capital with the eastern metropolis in 26 hours with just 2-3 stops. Has SL class, making it more accessible than AC-only services. Delhi-Mumbai Duronto (12289/90): Departs late night, arrives late afternoon next day. A good alternative to the Rajdhani, especially with slightly different timings. Mumbai-Ahmedabad Duronto (12267/68): The overnight express between Gujarat and Maharashtra. Zero intermediate stops — Mumbai to Ahmedabad in 8 hours flat.

Meal Service

On AC classes, meals are usually included (like Rajdhani). On Duronto Sleeper class (where available), meals may or may not be included — check your ticket details.

The catering is IRCTC-managed, similar to Rajdhani quality. Dinner is the better meal (thali format), breakfast is the weaker one (bread-butter-omelette standard).

Since Durontos have minimal stops, carrying backup food is important. You can't depend on platform purchases. Pack:

  • Dry snacks (biscuits, nuts, namkeen)

  • Fruit

  • Water bottles (at least 2L per day)

  • Instant noodles/cup of soup (hot water sometimes available from pantry car)

Booking Tips

  • Durontos run less frequently than Rajdhanis (typically 2-4 times per week). Check running days before planning.
  • Some popular Durontos fill up fast — Mumbai-Howrah in particular. Book at 120 days.
  • The flexi-fare system applies to some Durontos — early booking gets the lowest fare.
  • If the Duronto is full, check if a Rajdhani or Superfast Express serves the same route — it'll have more stops but similar comfort.

The Future of Durontos

Indian Railways has been rationalizing train categories. Some Durontos have been converted into Superfast or Rajdhani services. Others continue. The concept of minimal-stop premium trains remains valuable, especially as Vande Bharat services expand to long-distance routes.
