Delhi to Kolkata by train is roughly 1,450 km and takes between 17 to 23 hours depending on which train you pick. The Howrah Rajdhani remains the fastest and most popular choice, but there are several other trains worth considering depending on your budget, schedule, and which station in Kolkata works for you.

Route Overview

Almost all Delhi-Kolkata trains follow the same trunk route: New Delhi → Kanpur → Allahabad (Prayagraj) → Mughal Sarai (Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction) → Gaya → Dhanbad → Asansol → Durgapur → Howrah.

Some trains take a slightly different alignment via Patna, adding about an hour. The terrain is flat — this is the Gangetic plain — so the journey doesn't have much scenic variety, but the sheer scale of it (crossing UP, Bihar, and into Bengal) gives you a real sense of India's size.

Howrah Rajdhani — The Top Pick

There are actually two Howrah Rajdhanis running daily. Train 12301 goes via Gaya and is about 40 minutes faster. Train 12305 goes via Patna — useful if you need a stop there.

Both depart from New Delhi in the late afternoon. You get dinner, early morning tea, and breakfast included. The typical 2AC fare hovers around ₹2,500-3,500 depending on demand. 1AC can touch ₹4,800 during peak season.

The Rajdhani's catering has been handled by IRCTC in recent years. Quality varies by vendor — some days you'll get perfectly decent dal-rice-roti with a dessert, other days it's a mediocre thali. The breakfast is usually the best meal (poha or upma with a banana and tea).

Booking tip: The via-Gaya Rajdhani (12301) sells out faster because it's quicker. If you can't get a seat on that, try 12305. The 40-minute difference barely matters when you're sleeping through most of the journey.

Sealdah Rajdhani — For North Kolkata

If your destination is north Kolkata (Salt Lake, Dum Dum, Baranagar area), the Sealdah Rajdhani (12313/14) terminates at Sealdah station instead of Howrah. This saves you the hassle of crossing the Hooghly River during morning rush hour, which alone can eat an hour.

It's slightly slower than the Howrah Rajdhanis and has fewer runs per week. Check the schedule before planning around it.

Duronto — Overnight Non-Stop

The Howrah Duronto (12273/74) departs at night and arrives by afternoon the next day. It's a solid option if you prefer sleeping through most of the journey. The coaches are LHB (smoother ride, better safety) and the service is generally good.

One quirk: the Duronto runs 4-5 days a week, not daily. Verify the running day for your travel date.

Budget Picks

Poorva Express (12381/82): This is the workhorse of the route. It runs daily, has sleeper through 1AC, and gives you plenty of class options. The 24-hour journey time is a drawback, but sleeper class fares start at just ₹450. The train tends to be punctual on this route, which is more than you can say for many others. Kalka Mail (12311/12): One of Indian Railways' oldest services. It departs early morning from Delhi, giving you a full day of watching the UP and Bihar countryside roll by. Nostalgic but slow.

Platform Tips at New Delhi

New Delhi station is chaotic during the 4-5 PM window when multiple Rajdhanis depart almost simultaneously. The Howrah, Sealdah, Bhubaneswar, and Patna Rajdhanis all leave within a one-hour window.

Get to the station at least 45 minutes before departure. Find your platform on the display board (or check your train's platform on indianrail.app). The coach position charts are pasted on platform pillars — find your coach position before the train arrives.

The prepaid auto/taxi counter outside New Delhi station is far better than haggling with drivers. Use it.

Howrah Station Arrival

Howrah is massive and can be overwhelming when you arrive groggy after an overnight journey. Key things to know:

  • Prepaid taxi counter is on the ground floor, outside the main exit. Always use this instead of negotiating with cab drivers on the bridge.
  • Uber/Ola works but surge pricing kicks in during morning Rajdhani arrival times (9-11 AM) because every driver knows passengers are arriving.
  • Local trains to Sealdah depart from Howrah. If you're headed to central or north Kolkata, this is the cheapest option (₹10) but skip it if you have heavy luggage.
  • Metro station (Howrah Metro) connects to the East-West line. Still limited coverage but useful for reaching Esplanade or Salt Lake.

Best Time to Travel

October through March is the sweet spot — pleasant weather, trains run on time (no monsoon delays, no fog). The December-January period sees the worst fog delays on this route. Rajdhanis from Delhi to Howrah can arrive 8-12 hours late during dense fog weeks in January.

If you must travel during fog season, book connecting trains with generous buffers or just expect delays. No point getting frustrated — it's physics, not incompetence.

Food Along the Way

Mughal Sarai (DDU Junction) is the big food stop on this route. The station has decent platform food — the sattu paratha and chai are reliable. If you're on a Rajdhani, you won't need platform food, but if you're on the Poorva or Kalka Mail, DDU Junction is where you stock up.

Gaya station also has decent options. The litti-chokha vendors on the Gaya platform are worth trying if you haven't had this Bihari specialty before.

Pack some fruit and dry snacks regardless. The 17-24 hour journey is long enough that you'll get hungry between meal stops.

Rajdhani vs Flight

Delhi-Kolkata flights take 2 hours and cost ₹3,000-5,000 typically. Rajdhani 2AC costs about the same. The math clearly favors flying if time matters.

But trains give you flat-bed sleeping, no baggage restrictions, no airport commute, and a certain comfortable rhythm that planes can't match. If you're not in a rush, the overnight Rajdhani is genuinely one of the best train experiences in India.
