Delhi to Agra is just 188 km — India's most famous day trip. The Taj Mahal draws travelers from across the world, and the train is the smartest way to get there. With the Gatimaan Express doing the run in under 2 hours, you can leave Delhi after breakfast and be standing in front of the Taj by mid-morning.

Gatimaan Express — Speed King

The Gatimaan Express (12049/50) was India's first semi-high-speed train, running at up to 160 km/h. It covers Delhi-Agra in just 1 hour 40 minutes. Departing Hazrat Nizamuddin at 8:10 AM, you're in Agra by 9:50 AM.

The train has CC and EC classes. Onboard meals are included — a breakfast box. The coaches are clean and modern. The return Gatimaan departs Agra at 5:50 PM, reaching Nizamuddin by 7:30 PM.

This timing is absolutely perfect for a Taj Mahal day trip. You get about 8 hours in Agra — enough for the Taj, Agra Fort, and lunch. The Gatimaan has essentially made the Delhi-Agra day trip seamless.

Booking note: The Gatimaan is popular with tourists (domestic and international). It fills up, especially October-March. Book at least a week ahead. The train departs from Hazrat Nizamuddin, NOT New Delhi — make sure you go to the right station.

Bhopal Shatabdi — The Early Bird

The Bhopal Shatabdi (12001/02) is a Bhopal-bound train that stops at Agra Cantt. It departs New Delhi at 6:00 AM and reaches Agra by 8:05 AM. That's extremely early — the Taj Mahal gates open at sunrise (around 6 AM), so you'd be there by 8:30 AM with this train.

The advantage: fewer crowds at the Taj in the early morning. The light is also best for photography before 10 AM.

The disadvantage: the Shatabdi continues to Bhopal, so it's technically a stop rather than a terminus. And the return Shatabdi from Agra passes through around 10:30 PM, which is late. You'd need to take a different train back.

Taj Express — The Budget Classic

The Taj Express (12279/80) has been the traditional tourist train for decades. It departs Nizamuddin at 7:15 AM and reaches Agra by 10:05 AM. At roughly 3 hours, it's slower than the Gatimaan, but the fare starts at just ₹100 for Second Sitting class.

The return Taj Express departs Agra around 6:55 PM. The timing works for a day trip, giving you about 9 hours in Agra.

For budget travelers, the Taj Express 2S class at ₹100 is an absolute steal. The coaches are basic but functional for a 3-hour ride. CC class is available at around ₹300-500.

Station to Taj Mahal

Agra Cantt (AGC) is the main station. The Taj Mahal is about 6 km away. Transport options:
  • Prepaid auto-rickshaw: ₹100-150 to the Taj west gate. Use the prepaid counter inside the station.
  • Ola/Uber: Available and often cheaper. ₹80-120.
  • Cycle rickshaw: For the adventurous. About ₹50-80. Slower but more atmospheric.
  • Battery-powered eco-autos run from the designated parking area to the Taj gates.
Important: Motor vehicles cannot approach the Taj Mahal gates directly. They drop you at the parking lot, from where you walk or take a battery vehicle to the actual gate (about 1 km).

Day Trip Itinerary

Here's a tested Delhi-Agra day trip plan:

8:10 AM — Board Gatimaan at Nizamuddin 9:50 AM — Arrive Agra Cantt, take prepaid auto to Taj 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM — Explore Taj Mahal (2.5 hours is sufficient) 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM — Lunch at a restaurant near the Taj (Pinch of Spice or Esphahan) 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM — Visit Agra Fort (3 km from Taj, ₹50 auto) 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM — Mehtab Bagh for sunset Taj view from across the river (optional) 5:00 PM — Head back to Agra Cantt station 5:50 PM — Board return Gatimaan 7:30 PM — Arrive Nizamuddin

This leaves buffer time and doesn't feel rushed. If you skip Mehtab Bagh, you can add Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj) to the itinerary.

Taj Mahal Practical Info

  • Closed on Fridays (for prayers at the mosque inside the complex)
  • Entry fee: ₹50 for Indians, ₹1,100 for foreign nationals. Mausoleum entry costs extra.
  • Best light: Early morning (before 9 AM) or late afternoon (after 3:30 PM)
  • Guides: Hire an ASI-approved guide at the gate (₹500-800 for the full tour). Worth it for the history.
  • Security: Strict. No food, no tripods, no drones. Phones and small cameras are fine.
  • Crowds: October-March is peak tourist season. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends. Avoid national holidays.

Agra Food Worth Trying

  • Petha: Agra's famous sweet made from ash gourd. Panchhi Petha on Hing Ki Mandi Road is the original.
  • Bedai and Jalebi: The morning breakfast of Agra. Street vendors near Sadar Bazaar serve this.
  • Mughlai food: Pinch of Spice on Fatehabad Road is reliable for tourists. For a splurge, the Oberoi Amarvilas has a restaurant with Taj views.

Alternative: Driving

The Yamuna Expressway connects Delhi to Agra in about 3 hours (165 km). Tolls cost around ₹400 one way. The drive is smooth but monotonous — it's a straight expressway through farmland.

The train is faster (Gatimaan: 1h 40m vs 3h driving), cheaper (no fuel/toll), and eliminates Agra parking hassles. Drive only if you plan to visit multiple Agra-area attractions (Fatehpur Sikri, Bharatpur) that aren't near the station.
