Kovai Express — The Daily Workhorse
The Kovai Express (12675/76) is the most popular day train on this route. "Kovai" is the Tamil name for Coimbatore. It departs Chennai Central at 6:15 AM and arrives Coimbatore by 1:10 PM — a comfortable morning-to-afternoon journey.
The train has CC and 2S classes. Chair Car (CC) is ₹500-700 — very reasonable for 7 hours of AC comfort with decent legroom. Second Sitting (2S) is around ₹200, making this one of the most economical intercity options in South India.
The Kovai runs daily and has a strong commuter following. It's the unofficial business shuttle between Chennai and Coimbatore.
Vande Bharat — Fastest Option
The Chennai-Coimbatore Vande Bharat shaves about 30 minutes off the Kovai Express time. The early 5:15 AM departure is aggressive, but you arrive Coimbatore by 11:50 AM — before lunch. The modern coaches, included meals, and smoother ride justify the ₹300-400 fare premium over the Kovai Express CC.
Cheran Express — Overnight Classic
Named after the ancient Chera dynasty, the Cheran Express (12673/74) is the standard overnight option. Departing Chennai at 10 PM, it reaches Coimbatore by 6 AM. All classes from SL to 1AC.
The 8-hour overnight journey gives you a decent night's sleep. SL is around ₹250, 3AC about ₹700. The early morning Coimbatore arrival is ideal for connecting to Ooty — buses from Coimbatore's Gandhipuram bus stand to Ooty depart from 5:30 AM onwards.
Nilgiri Express — The Ooty Connection
The Nilgiri Express (12671/72) goes beyond Coimbatore to Mettupalayam (MTP), which is the starting point for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway to Ooty. Departing Chennai at 9:10 PM, it arrives Mettupalayam by 6:15 AM.
This timing is designed to connect with the NMR toy train departure at 7:10 AM from Mettupalayam. If the Nilgiri Express is on time, you can walk across platforms and board the toy train to Ooty — the iconic rack-railway climb through the Nilgiris.
See our separate Nilgiri Mountain Railway guide for the full Ooty connection details.
The Route
Chennai → Arakkonam → Katpadi → Jolarpettai → Salem → Erode → Tiruppur → Coimbatore
The route passes through central Tamil Nadu:
- Chennai to Katpadi (130 km): Flat coastal plain. Hot and dry for most of the year.
- Katpadi to Salem (190 km): Passes through the Eastern Ghats. Rocky terrain with hills visible in the distance.
- Salem to Erode (90 km): Agricultural heartland. Turmeric and banana cultivation.
- Erode to Coimbatore (100 km): Textile belt. Tiruppur is India's knitwear capital — you'll see the industrial landscape. Approaching Coimbatore, the terrain rises slightly as you near the Nilgiri foothills.

Coimbatore Food
Coimbatore has a distinct food culture — cleaner, less oil-heavy than Chennai:
- Annapoorna Restaurant: Legendary for South Indian breakfast. Multiple branches. The ghee-soaked rava dosa and filter coffee are perfect.
- Sree Annapoorna Sree Gowrishankar: Thali meals that showcase the Kongu Nadu cuisine.
- Kovai Bun Parotta: A local specialty — sweet bun paired with parotta and salna (gravy). Find it at street stalls near Gandhipuram.
Best Season
Year-round, honestly. Tamil Nadu doesn't have extreme winter, so trains are comfortable in any month. October-December is the northeast monsoon period when heavy rain can delay trains slightly. April-June is hot but AC coaches handle it.
For Ooty connections, April-June is peak tourist season for the Nilgiris. The toy train books out weeks in advance during this period. September-November offers pleasant hill weather with fewer crowds.
