The Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar is Sikhism's holiest shrine and one of India's most visited spiritual sites — welcoming over 100,000 visitors daily. The temple is open to all faiths, 24 hours a day, and the free community kitchen (langar) feeds 50,000-100,000 people every day. Getting there by train from anywhere in India is straightforward.

From Delhi (450 km, 5-7 hours)

The Delhi-Amritsar route is covered in detail in our dedicated guide. Quick summary: Vande Bharat (5h 15m, ₹900+), Swarna Shatabdi (5h 45m, ₹700+), Shan-e-Punjab Express (6h 15m, ₹200+), Golden Temple Mail (overnight, arrive 6 AM).

From Mumbai (1,900 km, 24-30 hours)

From Mumbai, the Golden Temple Mail is the iconic service — it runs the full Mumbai Central to Amritsar route in about 33 hours. Named after the temple itself, it's been running since the British era. For faster travel, fly Mumbai-Amritsar (direct flights, 2.5 hours) or fly to Delhi and take a Shatabdi.

From Kolkata (1,800 km)

The Amritsar-Howrah Mail covers this route in about 30 hours. Not fast, but it's a direct train that crosses the width of North India.

From Chandigarh (230 km)

Chandigarh to Amritsar takes about 3-4 hours by train. Several daily services run via Ludhiana and Jalandhar.

Golden Temple — What Every Visitor Should Know

Access: The temple is in the heart of old Amritsar. From the station (2 km), walk or take an auto (₹50-80). The temple complex is entered through the main gateway on the Grand Trunk Road side. Rules:
  • Cover your head (free scarves/bandanas available at the entrance)
  • Remove shoes (free storage at multiple points around the complex)
  • Wash feet in the small pool before entering
  • No smoking, alcohol, or meat products inside the complex
  • Photography is allowed outside the main sanctum
Sarovar (sacred pool): The Harmandir Sahib sits in the center of the Amrit Sarovar (Pool of Nectar). Walking the marble parikrama (circumambulation path) around the pool, with the gold-domed temple reflecting in the water, is one of India's most powerful spiritual experiences. Langar: The communal kitchen is open 24 hours. Everyone — regardless of religion, caste, or status — sits on the floor together and is served the same simple meal (dal, roti, rice, kheer). It's the world's largest free kitchen, run entirely by volunteers. Participating in langar is highly recommended — you can also volunteer for kitchen duty (called seva). Best times:
  • 4 AM — Amrit Vela. The spiritual dawn hours. Minimal crowds, the Gurbani (scripture reading) echoes across the quiet sarovar.
  • After sunset — The temple lit up at night is breathtaking. The gold dome reflects in the water.
  • 3-5 PM — Afternoon lull. Shorter queues for the inner sanctum.

Jallianwala Bagh

The memorial to the 1919 massacre is a 5-minute walk from the Golden Temple. The preserved bullet marks on the walls and the narrow entrance through which General Dyer's troops fired are deeply moving. The recently renovated museum and light-sound show add context. Allow 45 minutes.

Wagah Border

The India-Pakistan border ceremony at Wagah (28 km from Amritsar) happens daily at sunset. A theatrical flag-lowering ceremony with synchronized military drills draws thousands. Reach by 3:30 PM for good seats. Shared transport from Amritsar costs ₹100-200 per person.

Food

Amritsar has possibly the best Punjabi food in existence:

  • Bharawan Da Dhaba: The original amritsari kulcha with chole

  • Kesar Da Dhaba: Dal makhani that's been cooking since 1916 (literally the same batch, they add to the pot daily)

  • Makhan Fish Corner: Amritsari fish fry — battered, spiced river fish

  • Ahuja Milk Bhandar: Thick lassi in steel glasses

  • Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala: The jalebi-rabri combination near the Golden Temple

Accommodation

Budget dharamshalas (free or ₹100-500) are available through the SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) near the temple. Hotels range from ₹500 to ₹5,000. The temple complex also has free/cheap accommodation for pilgrims.

Tip: Stay within walking distance of the Golden Temple. The pre-dawn visit (4 AM) is the highlight, and it's easier if you can walk there.
