Watching India pass by through a train window is one of the great pleasures of rail travel. The Konkan Railway coast, the Himalayan foothills near Kalka, the rice paddies of South India — all best experienced from a window seat. Here's how to maximize your chances of getting one.

Which Berths Have Windows?

Sleeper and AC 3 Tier (SL/3A)

Side Lower berths: Always next to a window. This is the best window spot on the train — you have your own window right at eye level when sitting. Bay lower berths: Two per bay, but only one faces the window. The other faces the aisle. You can't choose which side during booking. Side Upper: Has a window, but when you're lying down on the upper berth, the window is at chest level — not ideal for viewing. Middle and Upper berths in bays: No window access. You can look at the ceiling and the bottom of the berth above you.

AC 2 Tier (2A)

Same as 3A — side lower berths are the best window spots. Bay lower berths have a 50% chance of being window-side.

Chair Car (CC) — Shatabdi/Vande Bharat

In the 3+2 seating arrangement:

  • Window seats are clearly marked. In the 3-seat row, seats 1 and 3 are window/aisle respectively. In the 2-seat row, seat 1 is window.

  • When booking, you can see the seat map on some IRCTC interfaces and pick a window seat directly.

Executive Chair Car (EC)

2+2 arrangement — every row has 2 window seats. You have a 50% chance naturally.

Booking Strategies for Window Seats

Strategy 1: Select Side Lower Preference

During IRCTC booking, choose "Side Lower" as your berth preference. If allotted, you're guaranteed a window. Side lower berths are positions 7, 15, 23, 31, 39, 47, 55, 63 in standard Sleeper coaches.

Strategy 2: Book on Chair Car Trains

For day journeys where scenery matters (Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, Jan Shatabdi), Chair Car gives you guaranteed seating facing forward with a window. The 2-seat row window seats are the best — no middle-seat neighbor.

Strategy 3: Book AC 2 Tier

With fewer berths per coach and wider spacing, 2A bay lower berths have better window access. Plus, the windows in AC coaches are cleaner and sealed (no dust).

Strategy 4: Book Early

The earlier you book, the more flexibility the system has in berth allocation. Last-minute bookings get whatever's left — usually middle or upper berths with no window.

Best Routes for Window Views

For these routes, a window seat transforms the journey from transportation to experience.

In Sleeper Class: Open Windows

Sleeper Class has open windows with bars — no glass. This means:

  • Fresh air (and dust) throughout

  • Unobstructed views (better photos, no glass reflection)

  • Rain comes in during monsoon (close the shutter)

  • Temperature depends on outside weather

Photography tip: Sleeper class open windows are actually better for train photography than sealed AC windows. No glass reflection, no green/blue tint. Some photographers specifically book Sleeper for this reason.

In AC Classes: Sealed Windows

AC coach windows are sealed with tinted glass. This means:

  • Climate-controlled comfort

  • Slight tint reduces direct sunlight glare

  • Cleaner view (no dust on face)

  • Glass reflection can be an issue for photos (turn off interior lights)

Tips for Maximum Enjoyment

Sit on the correct side of the train. On coastal routes (Konkan Railway), the sea is on one side. Research which side offers better views for your specific route. Check sunrise/sunset direction. For dawn and dusk photography, know which side the sun will be on relative to the train's direction of travel. Clean the window. In Sleeper, wipe the bars with a cloth. In AC, the interior glass might have smudges — a quick wipe improves the view significantly. Avoid night trains for scenic routes. Obvious, but worth mentioning: the Mumbai-Goa Konkan route is wasted if you travel by the overnight train. Pick a daytime service.

Plan your scenic train journeys on indianrail.app. Choosing the right train, right class, and right berth makes all the difference between seeing India from a window and seeing the bottom of another berth.
