VIKALP Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme Guide
How VIKALP scheme works on Indian Railways. Get alternate train accommodation when your ticket is waitlisted. Complete process and eligibility explained.
VIKALP is Indian Railways' scheme that automatically provides you accommodation on an alternate train if your waitlisted ticket doesn't confirm on the original train. Instead of losing your ticket to auto-cancellation, VIKALP moves you to a different train on the same route. Smart concept, and it works quite well.
How VIKALP Works
- You book a ticket on Train A — it shows WL status
- During booking, you opt for VIKALP (checkbox on IRCTC)
- If your ticket doesn't confirm on Train A by chart preparation
- The system automatically checks if there's an alternate Train B running on the same route with available berths
- If Train B has availability, your booking is transferred to Train B
- You travel on Train B instead, at no extra cost (even if Train B is a higher class or more expensive train)
- If no alternate is available, your ticket is auto-cancelled with standard refund
The Key Benefits
No extra cost: Even if the alternate train's fare is higher, you pay nothing extra. If Train A is a regular express (fare ₹800) and Train B is a Rajdhani (fare ₹1,800), you still pay ₹800. No manual effort: The transfer is automatic. You don't need to search for alternatives or make calls. The system handles everything. Same day travel: VIKALP offers alternates for the same date — you won't be moved to a different day. Class accommodation: You get the same class or higher class on the alternate train. Never lower. How to Opt for VIKALP

Which Trains Qualify as Alternates?
VIKALP considers trains that:
- Run on the same route (same origin and destination)
- Depart within a reasonable time window of your original train (usually within a few hours)
- Have the same or higher class available
- Are running on the same date
The system prioritizes trains closest in departure time to your original train.
Example Scenario
Original booking: Delhi to Mumbai, Train 12951 Rajdhani, 3A, WL/25 What happens:- Chart preparation for 12951 — your ticket is still WL/3 (almost confirmed but not quite)
- VIKALP system checks: Is there another Delhi-Mumbai train with 3A availability?
- Finds Train 12953 (another Rajdhani or Duronto) departing 2 hours later with available 3A berths
- Your booking is transferred to 12953
- You receive SMS: "Your ticket has been transferred to Train 12953, Coach B2, Berth 35"
- You travel on 12953 instead
VIKALP Limitations
Not available for all trains: VIKALP works best on routes with multiple trains. Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Kolkata, Delhi-Chennai have plenty of alternates. A remote route with only one weekly train won't have VIKALP options. Time window matters: If your original train departs at 4 PM and the only alternate departs at 6 AM, it might not be offered (too big a time gap). The system prefers alternates within 3-4 hours. Tatkal tickets: VIKALP is available for Tatkal bookings too, but the chances are lower because Tatkal is already a last-day booking. You can't choose the alternate: The system picks the alternate train automatically. You can't specify "I want Train X as my alternate." Cancellation after transfer: If you're transferred to an alternate and want to cancel, standard cancellation rules of the new train apply.Success Rate
VIKALP success depends on route density:
| Route | Alternate Train Availability | VIKALP Success Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi-Mumbai | 15+ daily trains | High |
| Delhi-Kolkata | 10+ daily trains | High |
| Delhi-Chennai | 5-8 daily trains | Moderate |
| Mumbai-Goa | 4-6 daily trains | Moderate |
| Small city to small city | 1-2 weekly trains | Low |
Should You Always Opt for VIKALP?
Yes, in most cases. There's no downside to opting in:- If your ticket confirms, VIKALP doesn't do anything
- If it doesn't confirm, you might get an alternate instead of auto-cancellation
- You don't pay extra
Check alternate trains on your route at indianrail.app to understand what VIKALP might offer. Knowing the alternates helps you decide whether to opt in.
