Valid ID Proofs for Train Travel in India — Complete List
Official list of valid ID proofs accepted for Indian Railways train travel. Know which documents the TTE accepts and which ones to carry.
Carrying a valid photo ID proof is mandatory when traveling with a reserved train ticket in India. The TTE checks it during the journey. If you can't produce a valid ID, you can face penalties or be treated as traveling without a ticket. Here's the complete list of accepted documents.
Accepted ID Proofs (Official List)
Indian Railways accepts the following photo identity documents:
- Aadhaar Card (or Aadhaar printout from UIDAI website)
- Voter ID Card (Election Commission card)
- Passport (Indian or foreign)
- Driving License
- PAN Card (with photograph)
- Photo ID issued by Central/State Government
- Student ID from recognized educational institution (with photo)

- Credit/Debit Card with photo (rare, but accepted)
- Photo ID issued by Public Sector Undertaking (PSU)
- Bar Council ID
- Photo ID issued by Cantonment Board
- Military/Defence ID (for armed forces personnel)
- Disability certificate with photo (issued by government)
Most Commonly Used
In practice, these four cover 99% of travelers:
| ID | Why It's Popular |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar Card | Universal — almost everyone has one |
| Voter ID | Widely held, clearly shows name and photo |
| Driving License | Common among working adults |
| Passport | Foreign tourists and NRIs |
Digital IDs — Are They Accepted?
DigiLocker: Yes, Indian Railways accepts DigiLocker-stored IDs. If your Aadhaar, driving license, or voter ID is in DigiLocker, you can show it on your phone. The TTE is supposed to accept it. mAadhaar App: Yes, the digital Aadhaar on the mAadhaar app is accepted. Aadhaar screenshot/printout: A printout of Aadhaar from the UIDAI website (even in black and white) is accepted. Reality check: While digital IDs are officially accepted, some TTEs in smaller routes may not be familiar with DigiLocker or mAadhaar. Carrying a physical copy is always safer.Name Matching Rules
The name on your ID proof should match the name on your ticket. However, Indian Railways is relatively lenient about exact matching:
- Minor spelling variations are usually accepted (Rahul vs Rahool, Sharma vs Sharmaа)
- Shortened names are often okay (name on ticket: R Kumar, name on Aadhaar: Rahul Kumar)
- Initials are fine (ticket says S. Murugan, ID says Shankar Murugan)
- Maiden vs married name — if you can explain the relationship, most TTEs accept it
ID Rules for Different Ticket Types
E-Tickets
At least one passenger in the PNR must carry the original ID proof. The ID number mentioned during booking should match the physical ID.If the PNR has 4 passengers, only 1 person needs to show the ID. The others are covered under the same PNR.
Counter (I-Tickets)
The primary passenger's ID is checked. Physical ticket must be carried along with the ID.Tatkal Tickets
Stricter ID checking. The TTE will verify the ID of the passenger whose name is on the ticket. Name mismatch is less tolerated for Tatkal.General (Unreserved) Tickets
No ID is typically checked. You don't have reserved seats, so there's no passenger list to verify against. What If You Forgot Your ID?
If you board the train without any ID proof:
- Inform the TTE immediately. Don't wait for them to catch you during checking.
- The TTE may accept alternate proof — even a company ID card or university exam admit card might work as a last resort.
- You may be asked to pay a penalty — an excess fare or fine for traveling without proper ID.
- In the worst case, you could be treated as ticketless. But most TTEs are reasonable if you're polite and clearly have a valid ticket.
Foreign Tourists — ID Requirements
Foreign passport holders must carry their passport during train travel. Visa details may be checked on some routes (especially near border areas).
Accepted foreign IDs:- Foreign passport (primary)
- Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card + foreign passport
Tips
- Carry a photocopy of your ID in addition to the original. If the original gets lost or stolen during travel, the photocopy helps at the next verification point.
- Laminate your voter ID if it's in paper form — they deteriorate quickly.
- Keep the Aadhaar app installed on your phone as a digital backup.
- For families: One adult's ID covers all passengers on the same PNR. But carrying individual IDs is wise for safety.
