Typos happen. You type "Rahul" as "Rahool" or accidentally swap first and last names during a rushed booking. Can you fix it? Indian Railways allows limited name corrections on booked tickets, but there are clear boundaries.

What's Allowed

Minor spelling corrections: Fixing typos that are clearly mistakes.
  • "Sunil Kmar" → "Sunil Kumar" (missing letter)
  • "Priyanka Shrama" → "Priyanka Sharma" (letter swap)
  • "RAJESH K" → "Rajesh Kumar" (expanding initials)
These are corrections to the SAME person's name, not changing the passenger entirely.

What's NOT Allowed

Complete name change: Replacing one person with another.
  • "Rahul Verma" → "Amit Singh" — this is NOT a correction, it's a transfer. Not allowed.
Changing the primary passenger on Tatkal tickets: Tatkal tickets have stricter name rules to prevent touting. Changes after chart preparation: Once the chart is prepared, name corrections become very difficult through official channels.

How to Get Name Corrected

For E-Tickets (IRCTC)

Method 1: IRCTC Customer Support
  1. Email care@irctc.co.in with:
- PNR number - Incorrect name (as booked) - Correct name (as per ID proof) - Booking transaction ID - Reason for correction
  1. IRCTC support reviews and makes the correction if it qualifies as a genuine typo
  2. Response time: 24-72 hours
Method 2: Call IRCTC
  • Call IRCTC customer care (number available on irctc.co.in)
  • Explain the correction needed
  • Provide PNR and verification details
  • The agent processes the correction
Method 3: Through Rail Madad
  • File a grievance on railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in
  • Select "Booking/Refund" category
  • Explain the name correction needed
  • Attach screenshot of the ID proof showing the correct name

For Counter Tickets

  1. Visit any PRS counter with the original ticket and ID proof
  2. Request a name correction
  3. The clerk verifies the ID and processes the correction
  4. A nominal fee may apply (₹50)

Time Limit

Correct the name as early as possible. The further you are from the travel date, the easier it is:
  • More than 48 hours before travel: Best chance of correction
  • 24-48 hours before: Still possible but might need escalation
  • After chart preparation: Very difficult — the chart is printed with the booked name
  • On the train: The TTE may accept a minor mismatch if the ID reasonably matches

What Happens if the Name Is Wrong During Travel?

If you couldn't get the name corrected before the journey:

Minor mismatch: Most TTEs accept tickets where the name is clearly a typo of the actual name. "Rajesh Kumr" on the ticket with "Rajesh Kumar" on the Aadhaar card — no reasonable TTE would deny this. Moderate mismatch: If the name difference is larger (initials vs full name, reversed first/last name), explain the situation to the TTE. Carry your booking confirmation email showing the booking was under your account. Major mismatch: If the name is completely different (wrong person's name), the TTE may treat it as an unauthorized passenger. This can result in a penalty or being asked to deboard.

Prevention Tips

Double-check names before confirming. IRCTC shows a summary page before payment. Verify every name, age, and gender. Use the master passenger list. Pre-saved passenger details in IRCTC reduce typing errors. Add family members once with correct spelling and select from the list for future bookings. Use the same name as on your ID. If your Aadhaar says "S. Murugan," book as "S. Murugan" — not "Shankar Murugan" or "S Murugan" (missing period). Consistency prevents issues. Save a template. For frequent travelers, keep a note with correct name spelling, age, and ID details. Copy-paste or reference it during booking.

A minute of verification during booking saves hours of correction hassle later. Check your booking details on indianrail.app or IRCTC after booking to ensure everything is correct.
