How to Check Any Train Schedule and Timetable
Find the complete schedule, route, stops, and timings of any Indian Railways train. Multiple methods to check train timetables explained.
Need to know what time a train reaches a particular station? Or which stations it stops at? Or how long it halts at your boarding point? The train schedule (or timetable) has all this information. Here's how to find it.
What a Train Schedule Shows
A complete train schedule includes:
- Station-wise arrival and departure times
- Halt duration at each station
- Distance covered from the origin station
- Day of arrival (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 for long-distance trains)
- Running days (which days of the week the train operates)
- Platform number (at major stations)
Method 1: Check on indianrail.app
Visit indianrail.app and search by train number or train name. You'll get the full route with all stops, timings, and halt durations. The interface is clean and works well on mobile.
Method 2: IRCTC Website
- Go to irctc.co.in
- Click on "Train Schedule" or "Train Route"
- Enter the train number (e.g., 12301 for Howrah Rajdhani)
- The full schedule appears with all stations
Method 3: NTES (National Train Enquiry System)
Go to enquiry.indianrail.gov.in:
- Click "Train Schedule"
- Enter train number or name
- View the complete route and timetable
NTES is the official source and is always up to date with schedule changes.
Method 4: SMS
Send an SMS to 139 in this format:
TRAIN <train number>You'll receive the key schedule information via SMS.
Reading the Schedule
A typical train schedule looks like this (example: 12301 Howrah Rajdhani):
| Stn Code | Station Name | Arr. | Dep. | Halt | Day | Dist (km) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NDLS | New Delhi | Source | 16:55 | — | 1 | 0 |
| CNB | Kanpur Central | 21:15 | 21:20 | 5 min | 1 | 440 |
| ALD | Prayagraj Jn | 23:38 | 23:43 | 5 min | 1 | 634 |
| DDU | Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Jn | 01:15 | 01:25 | 10 min | 2 | 783 |
| GAYA | Gaya Jn | 03:43 | 03:48 | 5 min | 2 | 982 |
| HWH | Howrah | 10:05 | Dest. | — | 2 | 1447 |
- The train starts from New Delhi at 4:55 PM on Day 1
- It reaches Howrah at 10:05 AM on Day 2
- It halts at Kanpur for 5 minutes
- Total distance is 1,447 km
Understanding "Day" Column
For trains that run overnight or for multiple days, the Day column tells you which day of the journey the train reaches each station.
- Day 1: The day the train departs from its origin
- Day 2: The next day
- Day 3: Two days after departure (for very long trains like Vivek Express)
Running Days
Not all trains run daily. Some run on specific days:
- Daily: Runs every day (e.g., most Rajdhanis)
- 6 days a week: Runs all days except one (often Thursday or Tuesday)
- Tri-weekly: Runs 3 days a week (e.g., Mon/Wed/Fri)
- Bi-weekly: Runs 2 days a week
- Weekly: Runs once a week
Seasonal and Temporary Changes
Indian Railways frequently adjusts schedules:
Speed upgrades: Trains sometimes get faster schedules, reducing travel time. Check the latest schedule, not an old printout. Diversions: Due to track work, trains may be diverted via alternate routes, adding extra stops and time. These are announced through NTES and railway zone websites. Temporary cancellations: During floods, fog, or maintenance, trains may be cancelled for certain dates. Always check before traveling. Festival specials: During Diwali, Holi, and summer rush, Railways runs special trains. These have separate schedules and train numbers.Tricky Stations to Watch Out For
Some stations have multiple names or codes that confuse people:
| Common Name | Official Code | Watch Out |
|---|---|---|
| Mumbai Central | BCT | Not to be confused with Mumbai CST (CSMT) |
| Howrah | HWH | Different station from Sealdah (SDAH) in Kolkata |
| Chennai Central | MAS | Different from Chennai Egmore (MS) |
| Delhi | Multiple | NDLS (New Delhi), DLI (Old Delhi), ANVT (Anand Vihar), DEE (Delhi Sarai Rohilla) |
| Bangalore | SBC/KSR | SBC is the old code, KSR Bengaluru City is the new name |
Using Schedule for Planning Connections
If you need to catch a connecting train, the schedule helps you calculate:
- Check when Train A arrives at the junction station
- Check when Train B departs from the same station
- Keep at least 2-3 hours buffer for connections — Indian trains are often late
- For confirmed connections, keep 4+ hours during fog/monsoon season
Checking Schedule Changes
Railways updates schedules during timetable revisions (usually twice a year). The latest schedule is always available on NTES. If you bookmarked a schedule from 6 months ago, verify it hasn't changed before planning your trip.
Major schedule revisions happen after the Railway Budget announcements and sometimes mid-year. New trains are introduced, timings are tweaked, and some trains get extended routes.
Knowing how to read a train schedule properly is fundamental to planning any train journey. It takes two minutes to check and saves hours of confusion at the station.
