The Two-Stage Process
Railway refunds happen in two stages:
Stage 1: IRCTC processes the cancellation — This happens within 24-48 hours of cancellation. IRCTC sends the refund instruction to the payment gateway. Stage 2: Your bank/UPI app processes the credit — This takes 3-7 working days depending on the bank. Some banks are faster (ICICI, HDFC typically process in 2-3 days), some are slower (certain cooperative banks or newer fintech accounts).Checking Refund Status on IRCTC
- Log in to irctc.co.in
- Go to My Transactions > Cancel Ticket History
- Find your cancelled ticket
- The refund status shows one of:
When the status shows "Refund Processed," the money is on its way to your account. Check your bank statement in the next 2-3 days.
Refund for Auto-Cancelled WL Tickets
Auto-cancelled waitlisted e-tickets follow the same timeline. The refund is initiated automatically at the time of chart preparation and auto-cancellation.
You'll receive an SMS saying the ticket was auto-cancelled and refund has been initiated. The money reaches your account within the standard 5-10 working days.
Why Refunds Get Delayed
Bank Holidays
If a refund is initiated just before a bank holiday (like Republic Day, Diwali week, or year-end), it can take up to 2 weeks because bank processing halts during holidays.
Payment Gateway Issues
Occasionally, the payment gateway (the intermediary between IRCTC and your bank) has technical issues. Refunds get stuck in the gateway and need manual intervention. This is rare but adds 3-5 extra days.
Incorrect Bank Details
If you changed your bank account linked to UPI or your debit card was replaced, the refund might bounce. In such cases, IRCTC's payment team re-processes the refund after verification — adding 10-15 days.
High Volume Periods
During festival seasons when millions cancel and rebook tickets, the refund processing queue gets long. Expect 2-3 extra days during Diwali, Chhath, and summer rush periods.
What to Do If Refund Is Delayed
Up to 10 Working Days: Wait
Most refunds land within 10 working days. Check your bank statement (not just the app balance — sometimes the credit doesn't show immediately in the app).
10-15 Working Days: Check Status
Log in to IRCTC and check Cancel Ticket History. If status shows "Processed," the delay is at your bank's end. Contact your bank's customer care with the IRCTC transaction details.
15+ Working Days: Raise a Complaint
Option 1: IRCTC Support- Email: care@irctc.co.in
- Include: PNR number, cancellation date, refund amount, payment method, bank details
- Go to IRCTC > Help > Lodge Complaint
- File under "Refund" category with your ticket details
- Visit railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in
- File a grievance with PNR and cancellation details
- Select the customer support option
- Provide PNR and ask for refund status escalation
30+ Working Days: Escalate
If nothing works after a month:
- File a complaint on the National Consumer Helpline (1800-11-4000)
- Write to the Railway Board's commercial department
- Tweet to @IRCTCofficial and @RailMinIndia (surprisingly effective for getting attention)
Refund for TDR Claims
TDR refunds take longer than regular cancellation refunds:
| Stage | Timeline |
|---|---|
| TDR filed | Instant |
| Under review | 15-30 days |
| Approved | 30-60 days from filing |
| Refund processed | 7-10 days after approval |
| Total | 45-90 days |
Tips for Faster Refunds
- Use IRCTC e-Wallet for refund. If you load your IRCTC wallet and book from there, refunds are almost instant. You can then withdraw from the wallet to your bank.
- Cancel during banking hours. Cancellations made during 9 AM - 5 PM on working days tend to get processed faster because the payment gateways are fully staffed.
- Keep screenshots. Save the cancellation confirmation page showing the expected refund amount. Useful if there's a dispute.
- Check your bank's refund processing time. Some banks (SBI, PNB) are slower than private banks (ICICI, HDFC, Axis). If your refund consistently takes 10+ days, it might be a bank-side pattern.
