How to Find Your Train Platform Number Before Reaching Station
Check which platform your train arrives at before reaching the station. Multiple methods to find platform numbers on Indian Railways.
Reaching a busy railway station and not knowing which platform your train is on — we've all been there. Running with heavy luggage across the foot overbridge while the train is about to depart isn't fun. The good news: you can check your platform number before you even leave home.
Why Platform Numbers Matter
Major stations like New Delhi, Mumbai CST, Howrah, and Chennai Central have 15-25 platforms. The distance between Platform 1 and Platform 16 can be a 10-15 minute walk through crowded overbridges. Knowing your platform in advance lets you:
- Enter the station from the nearest gate
- Use the right foot overbridge or subway
- Position yourself near your coach (if you know the coach position)
- Avoid the last-minute sprint with luggage
Method 1: NTES Website
- Go to enquiry.indianrail.gov.in
- Search for your train's running status
- The results show platform numbers at upcoming stations
- Your station will show the expected platform number
Method 2: indianrail.app
Check on indianrail.app using the running status feature. Platform numbers are displayed alongside arrival times for each station.
Method 3: SMS to 139
Send:
SPOT <train number>to 139. The reply includes the platform number at the next stop if available.
Method 4: Station Display Boards
Every station has electronic display boards showing:
- Train number and name
- Expected arrival/departure time
- Platform number
- Delay status
These boards are at the main entrance, at each platform, and near the enquiry counter. They're updated in real-time and are the most reliable source once you're at the station.
Method 5: IRCTC Rail Connect App
The app's running status feature shows platform numbers. Check closer to your travel time for accuracy.
When Platform Numbers Are Assigned
Platform assignments aren't fixed months in advance. They're decided by the station control room, often just a few hours before the train arrives. This means:
- Checking 24 hours before: Platform might not be assigned yet
- Checking 4-6 hours before: Usually assigned for terminus stations
- Checking 1-2 hours before: Almost always available
- At the station: Always available on display boards
Trains With Fixed Platforms
Some trains at major terminus stations have mostly fixed platforms:
| Station | Train | Usual Platform |
|---|---|---|
| New Delhi | Rajdhani Express | Platform 1-5 (varies) |
| Mumbai CST | Deccan Queen | Usually Platform 1 |
| Howrah | Howrah Rajdhani | Platform 9 or 23 (varies) |
| Chennai Central | Grand Trunk Express | Varies |
Platform Changes
Platforms can change at the last minute — sometimes 15-20 minutes before arrival. This happens when:
- Another train is occupying the originally assigned platform due to delay
- Track maintenance forces a switch
- Operational requirements change
Navigating Large Stations
For the biggest stations, knowing the platform isn't enough. You need to know which end of the platform to go to:
New Delhi: Has two entry points (Paharganj side and Ajmeri Gate side). Coach position signs are displayed on each platform showing where A1, A2, S1, S2 coaches will stop. Mumbai CST/LTT: Platforms are long. Check the coach position indicator (usually on yellow boards at the platform) to stand at the right spot. Howrah: One of the busiest stations. Platforms 1-12 are on one side, 13-23 on the other. Know which group your platform falls in to use the right entrance.Coach Position and Platform
Once you know the platform, the next question is where on the platform to stand. Indian Railways has coach position indicators — small numbered boards at intervals along the platform. They show which coach stops where.
For example, if your ticket says Coach B3 and the indicator shows B3 will stop near position 5 on the platform, go there. This saves you from walking along the entire platform with luggage after the train arrives.
Check the coach position on indianrail.app along with the platform number for the best preparation.
Tips From Experience
Always recheck 30 minutes before expected arrival. I once traveled to Jaipur and checked the platform 6 hours before — it said Platform 3. When I reached the station, it had changed to Platform 7. The 30-minute check would have saved me a bridge crossing with two suitcases. At junction stations (non-terminus), platform changes are more common. Terminus stations (where the train starts) tend to have more stable platform assignments. Junction stations where the train is passing through are more dynamic. If you can't find the platform info anywhere, just ask. The enquiry counter at any station will tell you. Or ask any railway staff. They usually know which platform a train is expected on, especially for regular services. For early morning arrivals, check the night before. If your train arrives at 5 AM, the platform will likely be assigned by 10-11 PM the previous night. Check before sleeping so you're not fumbling with your phone in the dark.A 30-second platform check can make the difference between a calm boarding and a chaotic dash across the station.
