How to Cancel One Passenger from Group Booking
Cancel individual passengers from a group PNR on IRCTC. Partial cancellation rules, process, and when it's allowed on Indian Railways.
Booked tickets for 4 people and one person can't make it? You don't need to cancel the entire PNR. Indian Railways allows partial cancellation — removing one or more passengers while keeping the rest. But the rules have some important conditions.
When Partial Cancellation Is Allowed
- Before chart preparation: Yes, partial cancellation is allowed online and at counters
- After chart preparation: Partial cancellation is NOT allowed online. You can do it at the counter, but with higher charges
- For confirmed and RAC tickets: Allowed
- For waitlisted tickets: Allowed (before chart preparation)
How to Partially Cancel Online (IRCTC)
- Log in to irctc.co.in
- Go to My Transactions > Booked Ticket History
- Find the PNR
- Click "Cancel Ticket"
- You'll see checkboxes next to each passenger's name
- Check only the passengers you want to cancel (leave others unchecked)
- Review the refund amount
- Confirm the partial cancellation
Partial Cancellation Charges
The same cancellation charges apply per passenger:
- More than 48 hours before departure: Flat charge per cancelled passenger
- 48-12 hours before: 25% of that passenger's fare
- 12-4 hours before: 50% of that passenger's fare
How Berth Allocation Works After Partial Cancellation
When you cancel one passenger from a group PNR, their berth is released back to the system. The remaining passengers keep their assigned berths (if already allotted).
If the chart hasn't been prepared yet, berth reassignment happens at chart preparation time. The remaining passengers' berths may or may not change — the system optimizes allocations.
Example Scenario
Original booking: 4 passengers — Rahul, Priya, Amit, Neha — all in 3A, fare ₹7,200 total (₹1,800 each) Situation: Amit can't travel. You want to cancel only Amit's ticket. Process:- Open the PNR on IRCTC
- Check the box next to Amit's name only
- Cancel
- Amit's refund: ₹1,800 - ₹180 = ₹1,620 (if more than 48 hours before departure)
- Rahul, Priya, and Neha continue with the same PNR
Edge Cases
Partially Confirmed PNR
If the PNR has 4 passengers — 2 confirmed and 2 on waitlist:
- You can cancel the waitlisted passengers (flat charge only, like any WL cancellation)
- You can cancel the confirmed passengers (standard charges apply)
- You can cancel any combination
Cancelling the "Primary" Passenger
In IRCTC, the first passenger on the PNR is considered the "primary" passenger. Can you cancel the primary and keep the rest?
Yes. There's no restriction on which passenger you cancel. Cancelling passenger 1 while keeping passengers 2, 3, 4 works fine. The PNR continues with the remaining passengers.
All But One Cancelled
You can cancel 3 out of 4 passengers, leaving just 1 person traveling. No issues.
Child Passenger Without Berth
If a child under 5 was added without a separate berth (zero fare), they can be removed from the PNR. But since there's no fare, there's no refund either.
After Chart Preparation
Once the chart is prepared:
- Online partial cancellation is blocked — IRCTC doesn't allow it
- At the station counter: You can request partial cancellation up to the train's departure
- The counter clerk has to manually process it
- Higher cancellation charges apply (25% or 50% depending on timing)
If you're at the station and need to cancel one passenger after chart, go to the counter early — preferably 1-2 hours before departure to avoid the rush.
Refund for Partial Cancellation
The refund for partially cancelled passengers goes back to the original payment method. If you paid ₹7,200 for 4 passengers and cancel 1:
- Refund amount: That passenger's share minus cancellation charge
- Remaining charged amount: Stays as-is
- The PNR shows "Partially Cancelled" status for the removed passenger
Tatkal Partial Cancellation
Tatkal tickets follow the same rule: confirmed Tatkal passengers cannot be cancelled for refund, even partially. If 1 out of 4 Tatkal passengers needs to cancel:
- Their fare is forfeited (no refund for confirmed Tatkal)
- The remaining 3 passengers' tickets are unaffected
- The cancellation is still processed to free up the berth
Tips
Cancel before chart preparation whenever possible. Online partial cancellation is fast, easy, and avoids the station trip. After chart, you have to physically go to a counter. Don't cancel and rebook the entire PNR. If only one person dropped out, partial cancellation saves you from rebooking for everyone else — which might result in different berths or even waitlisted status on the new booking. Inform the TTE about partial cancellation. On the train, the TTE might have the original passenger count on their chart. Show them the updated e-ticket showing which passengers were cancelled.Use indianrail.app to quickly check your PNR and plan alternatives for the passenger who cancelled.
