If you travel the same route regularly — for work, college, or any other reason — a Monthly Seasonal Ticket (MST) or Quarterly Seasonal Ticket (QST) saves you significant money compared to buying daily tickets. Commuters on routes like Mumbai suburban, Kolkata EMU, Chennai MRTS, and intercity routes use these passes extensively.

What Is a Seasonal Pass?

A seasonal pass is a railway ticket valid for unlimited travel between two specific stations for a set period — monthly or quarterly. You can board any train (within the applicable class) on that route as many times as you want during the validity period.

Types of Seasonal Passes

Pass TypeDurationTypical Discount vs Daily Tickets
Monthly Season Ticket (MST)1 monthEquivalent to ~15 single journeys
Quarterly Season Ticket (QST)3 monthsEquivalent to ~40-45 single journeys
Half-Yearly6 monthsAvailable on select routes
The MST costs roughly 15x the single journey fare. If you travel 25 working days a month (50 trips round-trip), you save the equivalent of 35 trips' worth of fare.

How to Get a Seasonal Pass

At the Railway Counter

  1. Visit the Season Ticket Counter at your originating station (not the regular reservation counter)
  2. Carry a passport-sized photograph (2 copies)
  3. Carry ID proof (Aadhaar, office ID, or any government ID)
  4. Fill the Season Ticket Application Form available at the counter
  5. Pay the season ticket fare
  6. The pass is issued as a card with your photo — this is your ticket for the validity period
First-time issuance takes about 15-20 minutes. Renewals are faster.

Online (Limited Availability)

Some railway zones allow MST booking through the UTS app:

  1. Open UTS app

  2. Select "Season Ticket" option

  3. Enter From/To stations

  4. Select duration (monthly/quarterly)

  5. Upload your photo

  6. Pay online

  7. The digital season ticket appears in the app

This facility is expanding but isn't available everywhere yet. Mumbai suburban and a few other zones support it.

Fare Calculation

Season ticket fare varies by:

  • Distance between the two stations

  • Class (Second Class, First Class, AC)

  • Duration (monthly, quarterly)

As a rough guide:

DistanceMonthly 2nd ClassMonthly 1st Class
10 km₹250-350₹800-1,000
30 km₹500-700₹1,500-2,000
60 km₹800-1,200₹2,500-3,500
100 km₹1,200-1,800₹4,000-5,500
Quarterly passes cost approximately 2.7x the monthly fare (a discount over buying 3 separate monthly passes).

Rules and Conditions

Route-specific: The pass is valid only between the two stations printed on it. You can board/deboard at any intermediate station on the route. Class-specific: A Second Class pass allows Second Class travel only. First Class pass allows both First Class and Second Class. Train-specific: Season tickets are valid on all trains that stop at your stations, including local/suburban, EMU, MEMU, and DEMU trains. They are NOT valid on:
  • Mail/Express trains (separate MST type needed for these)
  • Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto
  • AC specials
Identity: The pass has your photo and is non-transferable. If the TTE asks to check, show the pass with your photo. A pass used by someone else is confiscated with penalties. Break of journey: You can break your journey at any intermediate station and continue later — the pass doesn't track individual trips.

MST for Mail/Express Trains

For intercity commuters who travel by Mail/Express trains (not just suburban/local), a separate type of MST exists:

  • Available for distances up to 150 km
  • Costs more than local MST
  • Valid on all Mail/Express trains between the two stations
  • Class options: Second Sitting (2S), Sleeper (SL), and AC Chair Car (CC)
This is popular among commuters traveling between nearby cities — Lucknow-Kanpur, Delhi-Meerut, Pune-Mumbai (by intercity), etc.

Renewal Process

Before your pass expires, visit the season ticket counter with:

  • Your existing pass

  • A fresh photograph (some counters reuse the old photo if still valid)

  • Payment for the next period

Many regular commuters renew their QST well before expiry to avoid gaps. If there's a gap, you need to buy daily tickets for those days.

Cost Savings Example

Route: Borivali to Churchgate (Mumbai suburban, ~30 km)
Travel MethodMonthly Cost (approx.)
Daily tickets (2nd Class, 25 working days, round trip)₹750
Monthly Season Ticket (2nd Class)₹350
Savings₹400/month
For First Class: | Daily tickets (1st Class) | ₹2,500 | | Monthly Season Ticket (1st Class) | ₹1,100 | | Savings | ₹1,400/month |

Over a year, the savings add up significantly.

Tips for Season Ticket Holders

  • Keep your pass safe. Lost passes aren't easily replaced — you'll need to buy a new one.
  • Carry ID proof along with the pass. TTEs occasionally check identity against the pass photo.
  • Renew before expiry. A lapsed pass means buying individual tickets until renewal.
  • Check if your employer offers rail pass reimbursement. Many companies reimburse monthly pass costs for commuting employees.
For regular commuters, a seasonal pass is one of the best value propositions Indian Railways offers. Check available trains and routes on indianrail.app to plan your commuting options.
