Choosing the right payment method on IRCTC can mean the difference between getting a Tatkal ticket and losing it. During rush hour booking, every second matters — and some payment options are significantly faster than others. Here's a breakdown of everything IRCTC accepts.
Payment Methods Available on IRCTC
1. UPI (Unified Payments Interface)
Speed: Fastest (5-10 seconds) How it works: Enter your UPI ID (e.g., name@upi, name@paytm) on IRCTC. A payment request pops up on your UPI app. Approve it. Done. Best for: Tatkal booking where speed is critical. Regular bookings too. Supported UPI apps: Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, WhatsApp Pay — any UPI-linked app works. Tips:- Keep your UPI app unlocked and ready before starting the booking
- Make sure your UPI-linked bank account has sufficient balance
- If UPI request doesn't arrive in 15 seconds, try again or switch to another method
- UPI has a per-transaction limit (usually ₹1 lakh, varies by bank)
2. Debit Cards
Speed: Moderate (30-60 seconds including OTP) How it works: Enter card number, expiry, CVV. An OTP is sent to your registered mobile. Enter OTP. Payment is processed. Best for: Regular bookings. Backup for when UPI is slow. Supported: Visa, MasterCard, RuPay. Most Indian bank debit cards work. Tips:- Enable online transactions on your debit card beforehand (some banks disable this by default)
- Check daily transaction limits — some debit cards have a ₹25,000 or ₹50,000 limit
- RuPay cards often have lower transaction limits than Visa/MasterCard
3. Credit Cards
Speed: Moderate (30-60 seconds including OTP) How it works: Same as debit card — enter details, verify with OTP. Best for: Expensive bookings (2A, 1A, group bookings) where the amount exceeds debit card limits. Tips:- International cards (Visa/MasterCard) issued outside India also work on IRCTC
- Check if your credit card offers railway booking cashback or rewards points
- Some premium cards offer travel insurance when tickets are booked on them
4. Net Banking
Speed: Slow (60-120 seconds with multiple page loads) How it works: Select your bank from a list. You're redirected to your bank's website. Log in with username and password. Approve the transaction. Redirected back to IRCTC. Best for: When UPI and cards aren't working. Useful for high-value transactions with no upper limit. Avoid for Tatkal: The multiple redirects eat up precious seconds. By the time you log into your bank's slow portal, the berths might be gone. Tips:- Have your net banking credentials ready (username, password, OTP)
- Some bank websites are painfully slow — SBI's net banking, for instance, can take 10+ seconds per page
- Don't close any browser window during the redirect chain
5. IRCTC iPay (e-Wallet)
Speed: Very Fast (almost instant) How it works: Pre-load money into your IRCTC iPay wallet. During booking, the amount is deducted directly from the wallet. Best for: Frequent travelers and Tatkal bookings. Since money is pre-loaded, there's no bank redirect or OTP — just a wallet PIN. Loading the wallet: You can add money via UPI, cards, or net banking. Load it a day before your Tatkal booking so the balance is ready. Limits: Minimum balance ₹100, maximum ₹10,000 (for non-KYC). With full KYC, the limit increases to ₹1 lakh.6. Paytm Wallet
Speed: Fast (15-20 seconds) How it works: IRCTC has a Paytm integration. During payment, you're redirected to Paytm to approve the payment from your Paytm balance. Tips: Keep Paytm balance pre-loaded. Wallet payments are faster than card/net banking but slightly slower than UPI.7. PayPal
Speed: Moderate How it works: Available for foreign tourists and NRIs. Select PayPal, log in to your PayPal account, approve payment.Payment Speed Comparison
| Method | Average Time | Redirects | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPI | 5-10 sec | None | Tatkal, all bookings |
| IRCTC iPay | 5-15 sec | None | Tatkal, frequent travelers |
| Paytm Wallet | 15-20 sec | 1 redirect | Quick payments |
| Debit/Credit Card | 30-60 sec | 1 redirect + OTP | Regular bookings |
| Net Banking | 60-120 sec | 2-3 redirects | High-value bookings |
What Happens When Payment Fails
Payment failures on IRCTC are common, especially during peak Tatkal hours when millions are transacting simultaneously. Here's what to expect:
Money deducted but booking failed: This is the most frustrating scenario. Your bank shows the deduction, but IRCTC says booking failed. The money is automatically refunded within 3-7 working days. Do NOT try to pay again immediately with the same amount — you might get double-charged. Payment gateway timeout: The bank's page took too long and IRCTC timed out. Check your IRCTC booking history — sometimes the booking actually went through despite the error message. If not, the hold on your account is released within 24-48 hours. Session expired on payment page: You took too long (exceeded the 10-15 minute timer). The booking is cancelled and seats are released. Start over.Tips for Smooth Payments
- Always check your bank balance before starting booking. An insufficient balance error during Tatkal means lost time.
- Have a backup payment method ready. If UPI fails, switch to card. If card fails, try net banking. Don't put all eggs in one basket.
- Avoid booking during banking maintenance hours. Many banks do maintenance between 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM. Don't book during this window.
- Clear browser cache if payment pages don't load. IRCTC's payment redirect sometimes gets stuck with cached pages.
- For international travelers: Visa/MasterCard issued abroad works. PayPal is another option. Keep in mind that foreign transaction fees may apply from your bank.
- Check IRCTC's list of bank partners. Not every small bank is available for net banking. If your bank isn't listed, use UPI or card instead.
