If you've ever tried to book a train ticket and found yourself stuck on the IRCTC login page, you're not alone. This is one of the most common complaints among Indian Railways passengers, and it happens to almost everyone at some point. Here's how to fix every login issue you'll encounter.

"OTP Not Received" — The Most Common Issue

This is the number one login problem. You enter your mobile number, request an OTP, and nothing comes through. Here's what to do:

Wait at least 2-3 minutes. IRCTC's SMS gateway can be slow during peak hours (9:30-11:30 AM during Tatkal window). Don't spam the "Resend OTP" button — that can actually block your number temporarily. Check your SMS inbox carefully. Some phones filter transactional SMS into a separate folder (Samsung phones do this). Look in "Transactions" or "Notifications" tabs in your messaging app. Try the email OTP option. IRCTC sends OTPs to both your registered mobile and email. If SMS isn't working, check your email (including spam/junk folders). Check if your mobile number is correct. Go to IRCTC → My Profile → check the registered mobile number. If it's outdated, you'll need to update it — which requires logging in via email OTP first. Network issues. If you're in an area with poor signal, the SMS might not come through. Try switching from WiFi calling to regular cellular or vice versa. Sometimes restarting your phone helps.

Forgot Password

This is straightforward but people get confused by the steps:

  1. Go to the IRCTC login page and click "Forgot Password"
  2. Enter your User ID (this is NOT your email — it's the username you created during registration)
  3. Enter the captcha
  4. IRCTC sends a reset link to your registered email
  5. Click the link within 30 minutes (it expires)
  6. Set a new password following IRCTC's requirements

Password Requirements

IRCTC passwords must have:

  • 8-15 characters

  • At least one uppercase letter

  • At least one lowercase letter

  • At least one number

  • At least one special character (!@#$%^&*)

Pro tip: Save your IRCTC password in your phone's password manager. Typing it wrong three times locks your account.

Forgot User ID

If you don't remember your username at all:

  1. Go to the IRCTC login page → click "Forgot User ID"
  2. Enter your registered email address or mobile number
  3. Complete the captcha
  4. Your User ID is sent to your registered email
If you don't have access to either your registered email or mobile number, you'll need to contact IRCTC customer care (more on that below).

Account Locked

IRCTC locks your account after 5 consecutive failed login attempts. The lockout lasts for 30 minutes — there's no way to speed this up.

What to do:
  • Wait exactly 30 minutes. Don't keep trying during the lockout period — it resets the timer.
  • After 30 minutes, use the "Forgot Password" option to reset your password rather than guessing the old one again.
  • If your account is still locked after 30 minutes, clear your browser cache and cookies, then try again.

Captcha Not Loading or Always Failing

The IRCTC captcha is notoriously difficult to read. Here's what helps:

  • Click the refresh button next to the captcha to get a new one. Some captchas are genuinely unreadable.
  • Captchas are case-sensitive. Pay attention to uppercase vs lowercase.
  • Disable browser extensions like ad blockers or privacy tools — they can break captcha rendering.
  • Try a different browser. Chrome works best with IRCTC. If you're using Safari or an older browser, switch to Chrome or Firefox.
  • Clear cache and cookies for the IRCTC website specifically.

IRCTC Website Not Loading at All

If irctc.co.in itself isn't loading:

Server overload. IRCTC's servers come under extreme load between 9:45 AM and 11:15 AM daily (Tatkal hours). Try again after this window. Try the direct URL. Sometimes DNS issues prevent loading. Use https://www.irctc.co.in/nget/train-search directly instead of searching for "IRCTC" on Google. Check IRCTC's maintenance schedule. IRCTC takes the website down for maintenance usually between 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM IST daily. Some extended maintenance happens on Sundays. Use the IRCTC Rail Connect app. If the website is down, the mobile app sometimes still works (and vice versa).

Login Issues on IRCTC Mobile App

The IRCTC Rail Connect app has its own set of problems:

  • Force close and reopen the app if it's stuck on the login screen
  • Update the app — older versions sometimes lose compatibility with the backend
  • Clear app cache (Settings → Apps → IRCTC → Clear Cache). Don't clear data unless you want to re-enter your login.
  • Check if your phone's date and time are correct. Auto-sync should be enabled. Wrong timestamps cause OTP validation failures.

"User ID Already Exists" During Registration

This means someone (probably you, years ago) already created an account with that username. You can't create a duplicate. Use "Forgot User ID" with your email/mobile to recover the old account.

Account Deactivated

IRCTC deactivates accounts that haven't been used for 12+ months. If this happens:

  1. Visit the IRCTC login page and attempt to log in
  2. You'll see a message about account deactivation
  3. Click on the "Reactivate" link
  4. Verify your email and mobile via OTP
  5. Your account gets reactivated within a few minutes
All your previous booking history will still be there.

When Nothing Works — Contact IRCTC

If you've tried everything above and still can't log in:

ChannelDetails
Customer Care Number14646 (toll-free from Indian numbers)
Emailcare@irctc.co.in
Helpdesketicket@irctc.co.in
Twitter/X@IRCTCofficial (surprisingly responsive)
What to include in your complaint:
  • Your User ID
  • Registered mobile number
  • Registered email
  • Screenshot of the error (if any)
  • Brief description of the problem
Response time is usually 24-48 hours for email, and they're fairly responsive on Twitter during business hours.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

Before panicking, run through this:

  1. Are you using the correct User ID (not email)?
  2. Is Caps Lock off?
  3. Have you tried "Forgot Password" to reset?
  4. Is your browser up to date?
  5. Have you cleared cookies and cache?
  6. Is it Tatkal time (server overload)?
  7. Is it maintenance window (11:30 PM - 12:30 AM)?
  8. Have you tried both website and app?
Most IRCTC login problems resolve with a password reset and a cleared browser cache. If you're planning a Tatkal booking, sort out any login issues the day before — you don't want to be debugging at 9:55 AM when every second counts. Use indianrail.app to check train schedules and availability before you even open IRCTC.
