The IRCTC Rail Connect app lets you book train tickets, check PNR status, and manage your bookings from your phone. It's faster than the website for many tasks and essential for Tatkal booking on mobile. Here's how to get started.

Download

Android: Search "IRCTC Rail Connect" on Google Play Store. The official app is by "Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation." Verify the developer name — there are fake apps with similar names. iPhone: Search "IRCTC Rail Connect" on Apple App Store. Same developer verification applies. App size: About 30-50 MB depending on your device.

First-Time Setup

Step 1: Login

Open the app and log in with your IRCTC username and password (the same credentials you use on the website). If you don't have an account, create one on irctc.co.in first — the app registration can be glitchy.

Step 2: OTP Verification

Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. This happens every time you log in (unless you enable biometric login).

Step 3: Set Up Biometric/PIN Login (Optional)

The app supports fingerprint or face unlock for faster login. Enable it in Settings. This is especially useful for Tatkal booking where every second counts.

Step 4: Add Master Passengers

Go to Profile > Passengers and add your frequently booked travelers:
  • Name (as per ID)
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Berth preference
  • ID type and number
Having master passengers saves time during booking — you just select from the list.

Step 5: Payment Setup

Link your preferred payment method:
  • UPI ID
  • Saved cards (if available)
  • IRCTC iPay wallet

App vs Website — Which Is Better?

FeatureAppWebsite
SpeedFaster for simple bookingsBetter for comparing multiple options
Tatkal bookingGood (biometric login saves time)Better (multiple browser tabs)
PNR checkFast and cleanAlso fast
InterfaceMobile-optimizedMore detailed
Multiple bookingsCumbersomeEasier with tabs
ReliabilityOccasional crashesMore stable
My recommendation: Use the app for quick PNR checks, single bookings, and cancellations. Use the website for Tatkal (where you need speed + multiple tabs) and for comparing trains across dates.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

"Login failed" or OTP not received: The app server gets overloaded during peak hours (8-11 AM). Try again after a few minutes. Check if your SMS app is filtering out the OTP. App crashes during payment: This happens occasionally. Check your booking history — the booking might have gone through despite the crash. If not, check your bank account for deductions (refund is auto-processed). "Session expired": The app has shorter session timeouts than the website. Re-login when prompted. Captcha not loading: Switch between WiFi and mobile data. Sometimes changing the network resolves captcha loading issues. Slow performance: Clear app cache (Settings > Apps > IRCTC > Clear Cache). Also ensure you have the latest app version.

Security Tips

  • Don't save your password in the app on a shared device
  • Enable biometric login instead of remembered passwords
  • Log out after each session if using a shared phone
  • Keep the app updated — security patches are included in updates

Alongside Other Apps

The IRCTC app handles bookings and transactions. For researching trains, checking schedules, and comparing options, indianrail.app provides a cleaner interface without the need to log in. Use both for the best travel planning experience.
