The UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) app lets you buy unreserved train tickets and platform tickets from your phone — no queue at the station counter. It's especially useful for suburban commuters and short-distance travelers.

What Is the UTS App?

UTS is Indian Railways' official app for unreserved ticket booking. It handles:

  • General (unreserved) train tickets

  • Platform tickets

  • Season tickets (at select stations)

It's separate from the IRCTC app, which handles reserved ticket booking.

Download and Setup

Step 1: Download

  • Android: Search "UTS" on Google Play Store (developer: CRIS/Indian Railways)
  • iPhone: Available on App Store

Step 2: Register

  1. Open the app
  2. Enter your mobile number
  3. Verify with OTP
  4. Create a 4-digit PIN (for transaction security)
  5. Enter basic details: name, age, gender
  6. Registration complete

Step 3: Set Your Home Station

The app asks for your default station. This is the station you'll most frequently book from. You can change it later.

Step 4: Add Balance

Load money into the UTS wallet:
  • Through UPI
  • Debit/Credit card
  • Net banking
  • R-Wallet (Railway wallet)
Minimum load: ₹20-50 Maximum: Varies by zone

How to Book a Ticket

  1. Open UTS app
  2. Tap "Book Ticket"
  3. Select From and To stations
  4. Select ticket type: Single or Return
  5. Select class: General (2nd Class), First Class
  6. Select number of passengers (up to 4 per booking)
  7. Review fare
  8. Tap "Book"
  9. Enter your 4-digit PIN
  10. Ticket is generated — shown as a QR code on your screen

Important: Location Requirement

The UTS app requires you to be within approximately 3 km of the boarding station when booking. This is enforced through GPS:

  • If you're too far from the station, the app won't let you book
  • This prevents people from booking tickets for stations they're not at
  • The radius is approximately 3 km but varies by zone
Workaround: If you're just outside the radius, try walking closer to the station. The GPS accuracy can also be affected by buildings and network conditions.

Booking Platform Tickets

Platform tickets let you enter the station premises without traveling:

  1. Open UTS app

  2. Select "Platform Ticket"

  3. Select the station

  4. Pay (₹10-50 depending on the station)

  5. Show the digital ticket at the entry gate

Using the Digital Ticket

The booked ticket appears as a QR code on your screen. During the journey:

  • Keep the app open or the ticket screen accessible

  • The TTE/ticket checker scans the QR code

  • If asked, show the ticket on your phone screen

The ticket is valid for the time period shown (based on distance and speed of the journey). Make sure to board within the validity window.

Season Tickets on UTS

For regular commuters, the UTS app supports monthly/quarterly season tickets at select stations:

  1. Select "Season Ticket" option

  2. Enter From/To stations

  3. Upload a passport photo

  4. Select duration (monthly/quarterly)

  5. Pay the season ticket fare

  6. Your digital season pass appears in the app

Not all zones support digital season tickets yet. Check your zone's UTS app features.

Limitations

No reserved tickets: UTS is only for unreserved travel. For reserved berths, use IRCTC. Zone-specific features: Different railway zones have slightly different UTS app capabilities. Mumbai suburban features differ from Delhi suburban. GPS dependency: Without GPS enabled, the app won't let you book. This can be annoying if your phone's GPS is flaky. Wallet-based: You need to pre-load the wallet. No direct payment per transaction. Network required: You need internet to book. Once booked, the ticket works offline (stored on device).

Tips

Load wallet in advance. Don't try to load money when you're rushing to catch a train. Keep a ₹200-500 balance always. Screenshot the ticket. If the app crashes, the screenshot serves as proof until you can restart the app. Update the app regularly. UTS gets frequent updates with bug fixes and new features. An outdated version might not work properly. Use for platform tickets at busy stations. During festivals, the platform ticket queue can be insanely long. UTS app bypasses this entirely.

For reserved long-distance tickets, use IRCTC or check availability on indianrail.app. UTS handles the daily unreserved commuting needs perfectly.
