Ladies Quota is a separate reservation quota on Indian Railways exclusively for women passengers. It's often overlooked, and many women don't even know it exists. When the General Quota shows a long waitlist, Ladies Quota might still have seats available. Here's how to use it.

What Is Ladies Quota?

Indian Railways allocates a small number of berths in each class specifically for women traveling alone or with children under 12. This quota exists on most long-distance trains and is separate from the General Quota.

The quota is marked as "LD" (Ladies) in the IRCTC booking system.

Eligibility

  • Solo female travelers of any age
  • Women traveling with children under 12 years — the children can be male or female
  • The primary passenger must be female — you can't book Ladies Quota with a male passenger as the first name on the ticket
  • If two women are traveling together, both can be booked under Ladies Quota
Not eligible: Male passengers (even if traveling with a female), groups where the majority are male.

How to Book Ladies Quota Tickets

On IRCTC Website

  1. Log in to irctc.co.in
  2. Enter your journey details (From, To, Date)
  3. In the Quota dropdown, select "Ladies (LD)"
  4. Click Search
  5. The results will show Ladies Quota availability for trains on that route
  6. If seats are available, proceed with booking normally

On IRCTC Rail Connect App

  1. Open the app and start a new booking
  2. Enter journey details
  3. Change the quota from "General" to "Ladies"
  4. Search and book if available

Quota Size

Ladies Quota is small — typically 6-12 berths per class per train. On some trains, it might be even fewer. Because of the limited size, it fills up quickly on popular routes.

However, since fewer people know about this quota or remember to select it, you might find availability even when General Quota is waitlisted.

What Happens to Unused Ladies Quota?

If Ladies Quota berths remain unbooked close to the travel date, they are released into the General Quota pool. This typically happens during chart preparation. So, Ladies Quota doesn't "go to waste" — it eventually benefits everyone.

The release pattern:

  • Unused LD quota berths merge with GN quota during chart preparation

  • This can help confirm General Quota waitlisted passengers

Tips for Women Travelers

Check Ladies Quota first if GN is waitlisted. Many women default to General Quota and accept the waitlist without checking if LD quota has availability. Book early. Even though fewer people use Ladies Quota, it has far fewer berths. On popular routes (Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Kolkata, metro city pairs), LD quota fills up within a few days of the booking window opening. Combine with berth preference. Ladies Quota booking still allows you to select berth preference. Lower berths are especially useful for women traveling with small children. Carry ID proof. The TTE will check your ID during the journey. Any standard ID proof works — Aadhaar, voter ID, passport, etc. No quota for companion. If you're traveling with a male companion (husband, brother, father), only the female passenger(s) can be booked under Ladies Quota. The male companion needs a separate ticket under General Quota or another applicable quota.

Ladies Quota vs Ladies Compartment

These are two different things:

  • Ladies Quota: A reservation quota that allots berths to women within regular coaches (mixed coaches). You'll be in a regular coach alongside male and female passengers.
  • Ladies Compartment: A separate physical coach (or section) exclusively for women. Available on select trains, usually one coach per train. No men allowed in this compartment.
You can book a seat in the Ladies Compartment through General Quota — it's a coach allocation, not a quota allocation. The system assigns women passengers to the ladies compartment when available.

Routes Where Ladies Quota Helps Most

  • Delhi to Bihar/UP routes: Extremely high demand, GN waitlists are brutal. LD quota is a lifesaver during festivals.
  • Metro city connections: Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Kolkata, Mumbai-Bangalore — corporate routes where LD quota is less competed for.
  • Trains with high male-to-female passenger ratio: Routes to industrial or military areas where fewer women travel — LD quota often stays available longer.

Can Ladies Quota Be Cancelled?

Yes. Ladies Quota tickets follow the same cancellation rules as General Quota tickets. Standard cancellation charges apply based on the time of cancellation relative to chart preparation and train departure.

Real Experience

I know women who consistently travel on Prayagraj-Delhi route using Ladies Quota and never face waitlist issues. The route is high-demand, but the LD quota stays available until about 2-3 weeks before travel. Meanwhile, General Quota shows WL/80+ within days of the booking window opening.

The key is awareness. If you're eligible, always check Ladies Quota availability when booking. A quick quota change in the dropdown menu on indianrail.app or IRCTC can get you a confirmed ticket while others are stuck on waitlist.
