E-Ticket ID Rules — What TTE Checks During Journey
Know what the TTE checks when verifying e-tickets on Indian Railways. ID matching rules, digital ticket acceptance, and what happens if details don't match.
The TTE check is something every e-ticket passenger goes through. You show your ticket (on phone or printout) and your ID. The TTE verifies and moves on. Simple — unless something doesn't match. Here's exactly what they check and how to ensure a smooth verification.
What the TTE Verifies
When the TTE reaches your berth, they check:
- PNR number — matches the chart entry
- Passenger name(s) — matches the ID proof
- ID proof — original, valid, with photo
- Number of passengers — matches the PNR
- Journey details — your boarding station and destination match the ticket
- Ticket authenticity — the e-ticket looks legitimate (proper format, QR code if applicable)
Showing Your E-Ticket
You can show your e-ticket in these formats:
On your phone: Open the IRCTC email confirmation or the ticket in the IRCTC app. Show the screen to the TTE. Most TTEs accept this without issue. Printed copy: A printout of the e-ticket (even black and white). This is preferred by some travelers and TTEs because it's faster — no waiting for the phone to load or brightness to adjust. SMS confirmation: In a pinch, the booking confirmation SMS with the PNR number is accepted. The TTE can verify against their chart using the PNR.The ID Check
Only one passenger in the PNR needs to show the original ID proof. The name on the ID should match the name on the ticket.
| Scenario | Accepted? |
|---|---|
| Name matches exactly | Yes, always |
| Minor spelling difference | Usually yes |
| Initials vs full name | Usually yes |
| Completely different name | No |
| ID expired | Generally accepted (the name/photo is what matters) |
| Digital ID (DigiLocker/mAadhaar) | Officially yes, practically varies |
What If Names Don't Match?
If the name on your ticket doesn't match your ID:
Minor mismatch: The TTE usually accepts it. "Suresh K" on ticket vs "Suresh Kumar" on ID — no problem. Significant mismatch: The TTE may question it. If you can explain (nickname vs legal name, old ID vs updated name), most TTEs understand. Completely different person: This is treated as an unauthorized passenger. The TTE can charge a penalty or ask you to deboard. This is strict on Tatkal tickets (anti-tout measure).Tips for Smooth TTE Checks
Keep your ticket and ID accessible. When the TTE approaches, don't scramble to find your phone or dig through your bag. Have them ready — it makes the process faster for everyone. Charge your phone. If your e-ticket is only on your phone and the battery dies, you're in a tricky spot. Carry a printout as backup, or keep a power bank. The QR code matters. Newer e-tickets have a QR code that TTEs can scan. Make sure your phone screen brightness is high enough for the scanner to read it. Don't delete the booking email. Keep the IRCTC booking confirmation email in your inbox until the journey is over. It's the easiest way to pull up the ticket quickly. For group bookings: The person whose ID is linked to the PNR should be present during the check. If they're not traveling (they booked for others), ensure the traveling passengers have their own IDs matching the names on the ticket. What the TTE Cannot Do
- Cannot refuse a valid e-ticket with valid ID — if everything matches, you have the right to travel
- Cannot demand a specific type of ID — any ID from the approved list is valid
- Cannot charge extra for e-tickets — there's no "e-ticket surcharge" or "verification fee"
- Cannot force you to buy a new ticket if your valid e-ticket is on your phone and the phone is working
After Chart Preparation
The TTE works from the final chart prepared by the system. Your PNR, berth, and passenger details are all on this chart. Even if the e-ticket on your phone shows an older status (like booking status WL), the TTE sees the final status on their chart.
So if your PNR was WL at booking but confirmed after chart preparation, the TTE's chart shows "Confirmed" with your berth number. No confusion.
Check your final status after chart preparation on indianrail.app and save a screenshot. This ensures you have the latest status ready to show the TTE if needed.
