How to Check Coach Position Before Train Arrives
Find exactly where your coach will stop on the platform. Check coach position/composition of any Indian Railways train before reaching the station.
Nothing's worse than standing at one end of a 600-meter platform while your coach stops at the other end. Dragging luggage across a crowded platform with 2 minutes before the train departs is avoidable — if you check the coach position beforehand.
What Is Coach Position?
Every train has a fixed coach composition — the order in which coaches are arranged. For example: Engine - SLR - S1 - S2 - S3 - S4 - B1 - B2 - B3 - A1 - A2 - H1 - PC - S5 - S6...
Knowing this order tells you where on the platform your specific coach will stop. Platforms have position markers (numbered boards at regular intervals) that correspond to coach positions.
How to Check Coach Position
Method 1: indianrail.app
Visit indianrail.app and search for your train. The coach composition/position feature shows:
- Complete coach order from engine to guard
- Position markers on the platform
- Your coach's approximate stopping point
Method 2: NTES Website
- Go to enquiry.indianrail.gov.in
- Search for your train
- Look for "Coach Composition" or "Coach Position"
- The result shows the sequence of coaches
Method 3: At the Station
Platforms at major stations have Coach Indication Boards — yellow or blue boards mounted on pillars along the platform. These show:
- Coach names/numbers (S1, S2, B1, B2, A1, etc.)
- An arrow pointing to where each coach stops
Walk along the platform and find the board matching your coach. Stand there.
Method 4: IRCTC App
The IRCTC Rail Connect app shows coach position for most trains. Search for the train and look for the composition/layout feature.

Why Coach Position Changes
Coach position can vary between:
Different trains: Each train has its own composition. The Rajdhani has a different coach order than the Garib Rath. Different directions: The same train may have reversed composition on the return journey. Delhi-Mumbai might have S1 near the engine, but Mumbai-Delhi might have S1 at the rear. Rake sharing: Some trains share rakes (the physical set of coaches). When the rake is reversed at the terminal, the composition flips. Additional coaches: During peak season, extra coaches are added. This shifts the position of existing coaches.Pro Tips
Check position on the day of travel. Coach position can change due to last-minute coach additions or rake changes. The most accurate info is available on the day. Use the platform indicator boards as primary reference. They're updated for each arriving train and are the most reliable on-ground source. For Rajdhani/Shatabdi, the composition is mostly fixed. These premium trains rarely change composition, so you can rely on the standard layout. General compartments are always at the ends. GS coaches are at the front and rear of the train. If you're in GS, head to either end of the platform. Pantry car is usually in the middle. The PC coach is positioned centrally so it can serve both ends of the train. S1 is not always at one end. Don't assume S1 is near the engine. Check the specific composition. On some trains, S1 is in the middle. At the Platform
Once you reach the correct platform:
- Look at the yellow/blue coach indicator boards along the platform
- Find your coach number
- Position yourself there
- When the train arrives, your coach door will be right in front of you
- Board calmly without the platform sprint
This simple 30-second check before heading to the platform saves time, energy, and stress. Combine it with platform number verification on indianrail.app for the smoothest boarding experience possible.
