AC First Class is the top tier of regular Indian Railways travel. Private coupes with lockable doors, the best bedding, personal attendant service, and the quietest coaches. It's what Indian trains look like when you throw comfort concerns out the window and just want the best available experience.

Quick Facts

Class code: 1A (also marked as H1 on some trains) Berths per coach: 18-24 (depending on coupe/cabin configuration) Air conditioning: Yes (individually better controlled) Bedding: Premium quality — thicker blanket, better pillows Privacy: Lockable door on coupes Attendant: Dedicated coach attendant Toilets: 2 per coach, best maintained Carpet: Yes, on the floor

Coach Layout

The 1A coach has two types of compartments:

4-Berth Coupe

A fully enclosed cabin with a lockable door containing:
  • 2 Lower Berths
  • 2 Upper Berths
  • Individual reading lights
  • A small mirror
  • Charging points
  • Coat hooks
If 4 people from the same group book a coupe, they get complete privacy — it's essentially a private room on a moving train.

2-Berth Cabin

Smaller cabins with:
  • 1 Lower Berth
  • 1 Upper Berth
  • Lockable door
  • More intimate space
Some trains have a mix of coupes and cabins. The configuration varies by train.

What the Experience Is Like

Boarding: The coach attendant greets you and helps with luggage. They show you to your coupe and explain the facilities. Bedding is already laid out. The coupe: Close the door and you're in your own world. The noise from the corridor disappears. You can change clothes, spread out your luggage, eat without strangers watching, and sleep without worrying about security. For overnight travel, it's transformative. Temperature: The AC in 1A feels better maintained. Whether it's actually different from 2A/3A is debatable, but the smaller enclosed space means the temperature is more consistent. Toilets: The 1A toilets are noticeably cleaner. With only 18-24 passengers sharing 2 toilets (vs 46 in 2A or 64 in 3A), they stay cleaner longer. Silence: The most underrated feature. With so few passengers and closed coupe doors, the coach corridor is almost eerily quiet. No vendor calls, no midnight arguments, no children running around.

  • Government officials
  • Families wanting privacy (especially with small children)

  • Anyone who has the budget and values comfort

Fare Comparison

Route3A2A1A
Delhi to Mumbai~1,700~2,500~4,500
Delhi to Kolkata~1,800~2,700~4,800
Delhi to Chennai~2,200~3,200~5,800
Mumbai to Goa~1,000~1,500~2,600
1A is roughly 2.5-3x the cost of 3A and 1.7-2x the cost of 2A. For long-distance Rajdhani routes, the fare includes meals.

1A on Different Trains

Rajdhani Express: The flagship 1A experience. Meals are included (premium quality compared to 3A meals). Dedicated attendant service throughout the journey. Most Rajdhanis have 1-2 coaches of 1A. Duronto Express: Similar to Rajdhani 1A. Meals included. Non-stop or limited-stop service means you arrive faster. Regular Mail/Express trains: Not all trains have 1A. It's typically available on popular long-distance routes. The quality depends on the rake's age — newer LHB coaches have better 1A compartments. Vande Bharat: Doesn't have traditional 1A. Instead, it has Executive Chair Car (EC) which is the premium class.

Is 1A Worth the Price?

Yes, if you value privacy. The lockable coupe is 1A's killer feature. No other class offers this. For families, couples, or anyone who wants personal space, it's unmatched. Yes, for very long journeys. On 30+ hour routes (Delhi to Kerala, Mumbai to Kolkata), 1A makes the journey significantly more bearable. Yes, for elderly or health-sensitive travelers. The cleaner toilets, quiet environment, and attendant service matter a lot for older passengers. Maybe not for solo travelers. If you're alone, you'll share the 4-berth coupe with 1-3 strangers. The privacy advantage reduces. A 2A lower berth might offer enough comfort at lower cost. Maybe not for overnight-only trips. If you board at 10 PM and arrive at 6 AM, you're essentially paying 3x for 8 hours of sleep. 2A is fine for that.

Booking Tips

1A fills up slower than 3A or 2A (fewer passengers book it), so you might find availability even when other classes are waitlisted. Check on indianrail.app for 1A availability on your preferred trains.

If you're a family of 4, booking all 4 berths in a coupe gives you a private cabin for the entire journey — one of the most comfortable ways to travel by train in India.
